Before 1909, atoms were thought to consist of a diffuse positive charge surrounded by electrons (the “plum pudding” model). In order to predict the properties of the elements on the periodic table with this model, the distribution of electrons on a sphere had to be studied. This problem was named after Thomson, the originator of the plum pudding model and the first to study it. In 1909, Rutherf...

Plum bark necrosis stem pitting-associated virus (PBNSPaV) causes the plum bark necrosis stem pitting-associated disease. We obtained the complete genome of a PBNSPaV isolate (PBNSPaV-TA) using small RNA deep sequencing followed by overlapping RT-PCR. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a completed genome of PBNSPaV identified from cherry trees.

ABSTRACT The dynamics of virus interference between two isolates of Plum pox virus (PPV) belonging to the main PPV types, D and M, were analyzed in Japanese plum (Prunus salicina) by challenge inoculations. To assess the consequences of a PPV-M infection on plum already infected with PPV-D, and vice versa (predominance of one of the strains, recombination, synergism, symptoms aggravation, and s...

BACKGROUND: Strawberry puree color is unstable during processing and storage due to oxidative reactions. OBJECTIVE: To determine if strawberry puree prepared under nitrogen or carbon dioxide would result in greater retention of color and anthocyanins than samples prepared under air. METHODS: Purees prepared under carbon dioxide, nitrogen or air were pasteurized and stored at 25◦C. Samples were ...

Continuous flow microwave sterilization is an emerging technology that has the potential to replace the conventional heating processes for viscous and pumpable food products. Dielectric properties of pumpable food products were measured by a new approach (under continuous flow conditions) at a temperature range of 20 to 130 degrees C and compared with those measured by the conventional approach...

OBJECTIVE Normal aging in animals and humans is accompanied by a decline in cognitive performance that is thought to be due to the long-term effects of oxidative stress and inflammation on neurologic processes. Previous findings have suggested that protection against age-related cognitive declines may be achieved by increasing the dietary intake of fruits and vegetables, especially those that a...
