Respiratory gas analysis has now become a standard monitoring technique in anaesthesia: in theatres, intensive care unit, and for the transfer of ventilated patients. The AAGBI Recommendations for Standards of Monitoring during Anaesthesia and Recovery (2007) recommend as essential components during an anaesthetic an oxygen analyser with an audible alarm and a carbon dioxide analyser; a vapour ...

Swimming and training are carried out with wide variability in distances and intensities. However, oxygen uptake kinetics for the intensities seen in swimming has not been reported. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the oxygen uptake kinetics throughout low-moderate to severe intensities during incremental swimming exercise. We hypothesized that the oxygen uptake kinetic param...

NEW FINDINGS What is the central question of this study? Do the mechanical differences between swimming, rowing, running and cycling have a potential effect on the oxygen uptake (V̇O2) off-kinetics after an exercise sustained until exhaustion at 100% of maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max) intensity? What is the main finding and its importance? The mechanical differences between exercise modes had a p...

The Sugar Research Institute (SRI) in Australia provided the SMRI with a Sucrose Analyser for evaluation. Although the Sucrose Analyser is designed for online measurement of sucrose concentrations, this application describes the direct measurement of sucrose in factory streams in a laboratory environment. The Sucrose Analyser provides a quick and cost effective way of estimating the sucrose con...

Developments in modern neutron spectroscopy have led to typical sample sizes decreasing from few cm to several mm in diameter samples. We demonstrate how small samples together with the right choice of analyser and detector components makes distance collimation an important concept in crystal analyser spectrometers. We further show that this opens new possibilities where neutrons with different...

The increasing demand in automatic code transformation tools – which can preserve the layout, and can handle the whole macro syntax – led us to develop our scanner and parser tool. ParsErl is a generic syntactic analyser for Erlang. The scanner and the parser are generated from an XML definition of the grammar. The result of the scanning process is a graph, which can be optimised or balanced fo...

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the performance of automated leucocyte (white blood cell; WBC) counting by comparison with manual counting. METHODS The number of WBC was determined in heparinized synovial fluid samples by the use of (i) a standard urine cytometer (Kova) and a microscope (reference method) and (ii) a haematology analyser (Sysmex XE-2100; WBC/BASO and DIFF channels). Imprecision within ...

We report the case of a patient suspected of voluntary massive poisoning by ethylene glycol. Prehospital diagnosis was established by portable blood analyser and an early antidote with 4 MP treatment initiated in out-of-hospital setting. Use of portable blood analyser in prehospital care should be considered in case of suspected massive poisoning by ethylene glycol.

The MediWatch is a wrist-mounted noninvasive blood pressure monitor designed to capture the radial pulse waveform using arterial tonometry and yield blood pressure measurements when the waveform is calibrated. An early prototype of this monitor uses a pulse-sensing system with a cylindrical plunger to applanate the radial artery. This prototype was evaluated against simulated blood pressure gen...
