An isolated and spectrally narrow absorptive feature is prepared via a novel spectral hole burning process in an inhomogeneously broadened optical transition in Eu(3+):Y(2)SiO5. With the narrow feature it is shown that it is feasible to apply complex optical pulse sequences analogous to rf pulse sequences used extensively in NMR.

Proton magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has recently emerged as a clinical tool to image the lungs. This paper outlines the current technical aspects of MRI pulse sequences, radiofrequency (RF) coils and MRI system requirements needed for imaging the pulmonary parenchyma and vasculature. Lung MRI techniques are presented as a "technical toolkit", from which MR protocols will be composed in the ...

It is now possible to detect signals from tissues and tissue components with short T(2)s, such as cortical bone, using ultrashort TE (UTE) pulse sequences. The background to the use of these sequences is reviewed with particular emphasis on MR system issues. Tissue properties are discussed, and tissues are divided into those with a majority and those with a minority of short T(2) components. UT...

Superiority of poly-alphabetic sequences (PAS) for pulse compression radar over the binary and ternary sequences was established earlier. However, the enlarged alphabets in poly–alphabetic sequences deteriorate the noise and Doppler robustness at higher lengths in high resolution radar (HRR) systems. In this paper, poly-semantic sequences (PSS) with restricted alphabet {+1,-1} are considered an...

PURPOSE To develop arrhythmia-insensitive inversion recovery sequences for improved visualization of myocardial scar and quantification of diffuse fibrosis. METHODS A novel preparation pre-pulse, called saturation pulse prepared heart-rate-independent inversion recovery, is introduced, which consists of a combination of saturation and inversion pulses to remove the magnetization history in ea...
