Despite progress in preventing and controlling infectious complications of renal transplantation, posttransplantation viral infections remain a significant threat to patients’ health. Optimizing outcomes after renal transplantation depends on effective management of posttransplant infectious complications. This paper discusses manifestations, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of common viral...
a massive purulent discharge from the right prostatic lobe was observed. Prostatic tissue obtained by subsequent transurethral resection appeared mostly nec
The viral infections with greatest impact on the renal transplant recipient are those due to cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, and the two hepatitis viruses, hepatitis B and C. All of these are modulated by the administered immunosuppressive therapy, and all have both direct and indirect effects on the transplant patient. The direct effects are the infectious disease clinical syndromes that ...
Infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in renal transplant recipients. Although these patients are susceptible to many types of infection, soft tissue infections are rare. We report a case of tuberculous pyomyositis involving the left erector spinae muscle but with no other manifestations of tuberculosis. The diagnosis was suspected from the CT scan appearance and confirmed by ...
Background: In a recent study, we were able to demonstrate a role for leukocyte transfer in the induction of liver damage in recipient mice after induction of IR (60 min of bilateral renal artery occlusion and 3 hrs reperfusion) injury in donors. The present study investigates the role of leukocyte transfer in the induction of kidney damage in recipient mice after induction of renal IR injury i...
Abstract Purpose Those of black descent make up 22.7% people in the UK receiving dialysis. A Registry data analysis transplant outcomes on Black-Population (BP) was done and a comparative assessment with Caucasian-Population (CP) renal recipients performed. Methods We harmonized Renal-Transplant Data to shortlist transplants Black Caucasian patients from year 2000-2019. The demographics surviva...
Sir, Mucormycosis is an uncommon deep mycosis caused by eumycetes included in the Mucorale order that belong to the zygomycete class (1). Species of Rhizopus, Mucor and Absidia are the most frequently isolated zygomycotic fungi in human infected tissue (2). They can cause opportunistic infections in the immunocompromised host and in patients with underlying diseases such as diabetes mellitus or...
SUMMARY A 57-year-old male was started on hemodialysis in 1998 because of end-stage renal disease caused by IgA nephropathy. He received an allograft in April 2002 and was treated with cyclosporine, mycophenolate mofetil and steroids. Graft function was optimal, without episodes of acute rejection. A red intradermal painless nodule was observed in the left preauricular region in September 200...
Paracoccidioidomycosis is a fungal infection rarely described in immunodeficient patients. We report a severe case of pulmonary paracoccidioidomycosis in a renal transplant recipient and demonstrate deficiencies of in vitro lymphocytic transformation assays, skin hypersensitivity tests, as well as low levels of antibodies to Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.
