Many image processing applications within MRI are grounded on stochastic methods based on the prior knowledge on the statistics of noise. The ubiquitous Gaussian model provides a poor fitting for mediumlow SNRs, yielding to the use of Rician statistics: the noise in MRI has been traditionally modeled as a stationary process governed by a Rician distribution with constant noise power at each vox...
In this paper, we study a kernel smoothing approach for denoising a tensor field. Particularly, both simulation studies and theoretical analysis are conducted to understand the effects of the noise structure and the structure of the tensor field on the performance of different smoothers arising from using different metrics, viz., Euclidean, log-Euclidean and affine invariant metrics. We also st...
A method to estimate the magnitude MR data from several noisy samples is presented. It is based on the Linear Minimum Mean Squared Error (LMMSE) estimator for the Rician noise model when several scanning repetitions are available. This method gives a closed-form analytical solution that takes into account the probability distribution of the data as well as the existing level of noise, showing a...
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an outstanding medical imaging modality but the quality often suffers from noise pollution during image acquisition and transmission. The purpose of this study is to enhance image quality using feature-preserving denoising method. In current literature, most existing MRI denoising methods did not simultaneously take the global image prior and local image feat...
This paper proposes a new adaptive wavelet-based Magnetic Resonance images denoising algorithm. A Rician distribution for background-noise modelling is introduced and a Maximum-Likelihood method for the parameter estimation procedure is used. Further discrimination between edgeand noise-related coefficients is achieved by updating the shrinkage function along consecutive scales and applying spa...
In this paper, a filtering approach for the 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) assuming a Rician model for noise is addressed. Our denoising method is based on the Conventional Approach (CA) proposed to deal with the noise issue in the squared domain of the acquired magnitude MRI, where the noise distribution follows a Chi-square model rather than the Rician one. In the CA filtering method, th...
Diffusion-Weighted MRI (DW-MRI) is subject to random noise yielding measures that are different from their real values, and thus biasing the subsequently estimated tensors. The Non-Local Means (NLMeans) filter has recently been proposed to denoise MRI with high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This filter has been shown to allow the best restoration of image intensities for the estimation of diffus...
Magnetic resonance (MR) images acquired with fast measurement often display poor signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast. With the advent of high temporal resolution imaging, there is a growing need to remove these noise artifacts. The noise in magnitude MR images is signal-dependent (Rician), whereas most de-noising algorithms assume additive Gaussian (white) noise. However, the Rician distri...
Magnitude magnetic resonance data are Rician distributed. In this note a new method is proposed to estimate the image noise variance for this type of data distribution. The method is based on a double image acquisition, thereby exploiting the knowledge of the Rice distribution moments.
