We investigated the antistaphylococcal activities of daptomycin, gentamicin, and rifampin against two Staphylococcus aureus strains and their stable small-colony variants, singly and in combination, in human monocyte-derived macrophages and in broth. Intracellularly, the three-drug combination and two-drug combinations with rifampin were most effective. Extracellularly, daptomycin, daptomycin p...

Rifampin was shown in vitro to decrease the amphotericin B minimal inhibitory concentrations of all of 10 strains of Coccidioides immitis tested. These decreases ranged from two- to fourfold and occurred with rifampin concentrations of 10 to 40 mug/ml. Rifampin alone was without effect.

Activity of rifampin against 129 Streptococcus mitis isolates obtained from patients with hematologic cancer was investigated. One hundred twenty-five strains were susceptible to rifampin, and 4 were resistant (MIC = 32 to 64 microg/ml). Resistance to rifampin was related to mutations in the rpoB gene: His(526)Asn in three strains and His(526)Asp in one strain.

BACKGROUND Rifampin is a key drug in antituberculosis chemotherapy because it rapidly kills the majority of bacilli in tuberculosis lesions, prevents relapse and thus enables 6-month short-course chemotherapy. Little is known about the pharmacokinetics of rifampin in children. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of rifampin in children with tuberculosis, both human ...

Here we present the complete genome sequences of two Helicobacter pylori rifampin-resistant (Rif(r)) strains (Rif1 and Rif2). Rif(r) strains were obtained by in vitro selection of H. pylori 26695 on agar plates with 20 µg/ml rifampin. The genome data provide insights on the genomic diversity of H. pylori under selection by rifampin.

The rpoB gene encodes the beta subunit of the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase of bacteria. Mutations in defined areas result in resistance to rifampin. Mycobacterium smegmatis is naturally resistant to rifampin, but analysis of the rpoB gene revealed no identifiable rifampin resistance mutations. Another mechanism of resistance may be present.

Currently recommended treatment regimens for human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME) include doxycycline or tetracycline. Antibiotic susceptibility studies demonstrate that rifampin has in vitro bactericidal activity against Ehrlichia. Case reports have suggested clinical response with rifampin treatment of human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA). We report the first case of HME successfully treated w...

Promoter-lux fusions that showed rifampin-modulated transcription were identified from a Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium 14028 reporter library. The transformation of a subset of fusions into mutants that lacked one of six global regulatory proteins or were rifampin resistant showed that transcription modulation was independent of the global regulators, promoter specific, and dependent ...

BACKGROUND Rifampin is one of the most important drugs in first-line therapies for tuberculosis. The renal toxicity of rifampin has been reported sporadically and acute tubulointerstitial nephritis (ATIN) is a frequent histological finding. We describe for the first time a case of ATIN and Fanconi syndrome presenting as hypokalemic paralysis, associated with the use of rifampin. CASE PRESENTA...
