A new rosane diterpenoid, 3a-hydroxy-5,15-rosadien-11-one (3), was isolated, together with a known rosane diterpenoid, 5,15-rosadiene-3,11-dione (4), and an aromadendrane sesquiterpenoid, ent-cyclocolorenone (5), from the Et(2)O extract of an unidentified Argentine liverwort Anastrophyllum species. Moreover, four known sesquiterpene lactones 6-9 and two known bibenzyls 10, 11 were isolated from...
The Asteraceae, one of the largest families among angiosperms, is chemically characterised by the production of sesquiterpene lactones (SLs). A total of 1,111 SLs, which were extracted from 658 species, 161 genera, 63 subtribes and 15 tribes of Asteraceae, were represented and registered in two dimensions in the SISTEMATX, an in-house software system, and were associated with their botanical so...
The biosynthetic route for epoxyangelate esters of the sesquiterpene lactones (STL) uvedalin and enhydrin from in vitro cultures of Smallanthus sonchifolius (Asteraceae) was investigated with (13)C-precursors for the first time in the literature. Photomicroscope analyses and studies using MALDI-MS imaging confirmed that glandular trichomes accumulate STL.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Stereochemical variation is widely known to influence the bioactivity of compounds in the context of pharmacology and pesticide science, but our understanding of its importance in mediating plant-herbivore interactions is limited, particularly in field settings. Similarly, sesquiterpene lactones are a broadly distributed class of putative defensive compounds, but little is k...
The species of genus Achillea, particularly those belonging to the Achillea millefolium group have received a lot of attention so far, due to their use in traditional medicine. Among the numerous chemical compounds isolated from the A. millefolium species, the sesquiterpene lactones are usually one of the major constituents (Seaman, 1982). Continuing our chemotaxonomic examination of Bulgarian ...
A transformed root culture of Cichorium intybus L. (Asteraceae) was found to produce sesquiterpene lactones of guaiane and germacrane type. Lactucopicrin, 8-desoxylactucin and three sesquiterpene lactone glycosides: crepidiaside B, sonchuside A and ixerisoside D were isolated from the roots. The yield of 8-desoxylactucin reached 0.03 g l(-1) at the early stationary phase of the culture.
Plants display extensive intraspecific variation in secondary metabolites. However, the selective forces shaping this diversity remain often unknown, especially below ground. Using Taraxacum officinale and its major native insect root herbivore Melolontha melolontha, we tested whether below-ground herbivores drive intraspecific variation in root secondary metabolites. We found that high M. melo...
Vlasouliolides A-D (1-4), four rare sesquiterpene lactone dimers, were isolated from Vladimiria souliei. The common structural characteristic of 1-4 is the C32 skeleton comprising two sesquiterpene lactone units linked by a C11-C13' single bond with one acetyl connected to the C-13 position of one of the two sesquiterpene lactone units. The stereochemistries of 1-4 were assigned by a combinatio...
The aerial parts of Achillea setacea afforded, in addition of a rare monoterpene triol and 12 known sesquiterpene lactones, a new guaianolide containing an endoperoxide ring. Its structure was elucidated by spectral methods.
The chromatographic separation of a methylene chloride extract of Artemisia rubripes led to the isolation of a new sesquiterpene lactone (3), together with four known compounds, a coumarin (2) and three terpenes (1, 4, and 5). Their structures were characterized to be 1beta,6alpha-dihydroxy-4(15)-eudesmene (1), scopoletin (2), 1alpha,4beta-dihydroxy-8alpha-acetoxy-guaia-2,10(14), 11(13)-triene-...
