BACKGROUND Shigella species are among the common causes of bacterial diarrhoeal diseases. Traditional detection methods are time-consuming resulting in delay in treatment and control of Shigella infections thus there is a need to develop molecular methods for rapid and simultaneous detection of Shigella spp. In this study a rapid multiplex PCR were developed for simultaneous detection of three ...

Ten bacterial strains are described that give biochemical reactions characteristic of the genus Shigella but do not belong to any of the established or provisional serovars. The strains ferment mannitol and are antigenically indistinguishable. They do not possess any of the group antigens of Shigella flexneri, and it is therefore proposed that they be regarded as members of a new provisional se...

Although the common mucosal immune system has generally been considered to have only short-term memory, recent data suggest that long-term memory exists for Shigella virulence plasmid antigens. Because such antigens might cross-react with environmental antigens, we investigated milk for the persistence of antibodies to the specific Shigella lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antigens. Enzyme-linked immun...

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Shigella flexneri is the most common species of Shigella causing diarrhoea and dysentery in Asia including India. Multidrug resistance in Shigella species has been reported worldwide and there is rising concern regarding development of fluoroquinolone resistance. This study was undertaken to find out the resistance pattern of Sh. flexneri, the commonest shigella isolated...

Two patients are described who developed septicaemia with Shigella flexneri following renal transplantation. Pre-operative screening had not identified either patient as a chronic carrier of Shigella sp. The acute management and problems posed by unrecognized carriers amongst patients undergoing transplantation in areas of the world where Shigella is endemic, are discussed.

The IcsA (intracellular spread gene A) autotransporter from Shigella flexneri is a key virulence factor. We identified a stable fragment comprising residues 591 to 758, which corresponds to the autochaperone region of the IcsA passenger domain. We showed that thermal unfolding of the autochaperone region is reversible and determined its crystal structure at 2.0-Å resolution.

To characterize Shigella clinical strains, we studied 82 Shigella strains recovered from 719 stool samples of patients with bloody diarrhea in Shiraz, Iran, over the period from April to October 2003. Serological assay classified the Shigella isolates as follows: 61 (74.39%) Shigella sonnei isolates, 16 (19.51%) Shigella flexneri isolates, 3 (3.65%) Shigella boydii isolates, and 2 (2.43%) Shige...

The nutritional requirements of Shigella grown in chemically defined media have been investigated by Koser et at. (1938a, b), Kligler and Grosowitz (1939), and Weil and Black (1944), among others. These investigators have reported the successful cultivation of various strains of Shigella in chemically defined, synthetic media of variable composition. All of these media consisted of inorganic sa...

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify a 760-base-pair (bp) fragment with the 220-kbp invasive plasmids of enteroinvasive Escherichia coli, Shigella flexneri, Shigella dysenteriae, Shigella boydii, and Shigella sonnei as templates. This PCR product was easily detected by agarose gel electrophoresis. A 210-bp AccI-PstI fragment lying within the amplified region was used as a pro...

Based upon the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) structure and antigenicity of Shigella group B, a strategy for broad cross-protection against 14 Shigella flexneri serotypes was designed. This strategy involves the use of two S. flexneri serotypes (2a and 3a), which together bear the all of the major antigenic group factors of this group. The novel attenuated strains used in these studies were S. flexne...
