The careful planning of a sinus lift procedure is the key to avoiding surgical complications. In this clinical case, female patient, 59 years old and totally edentulous in maxilla, was referred Egas Moniz’s Dental Clinic Implantology consultation with indication for bilateral external maxillary sinuses prior implant placement. Both orthopantomography cone-beam computed tomography were used show...

It is not known why the coronary arteries almost always originate only from the right and left aortic sinuses of Valsalva, since the structure and conditions appear to be the same for all six sinuses of the embryonic great arteries. We sought a possible mechanical explanation for the phenomenon by studying the development of the coronary vasculature in 351 staged, serially sectioned human embry...

BACKGROUND Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a pathogen associated with cystic fibrosis that has potential to decrease lung function and cause respiratory failure. Paranasal sinuses are increasingly recognised as potential reservoirs for intermittent colonisation by P. aeruginosa. This case documents investigation and outcome of P. aeruginosa recurrence in a male paediatric patient over an eight year p...

Introduction/Background The paranasal sinuses consist of the maxillary, ethmoid, sphenoid, and frontal sinuses. They communicate with the nasal cavity in the midline and all structures together form a group of air-filled cavities where cancers can arise, grow, and spread without encountering significant barriers to local extension. Cancers of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity are rare mali...

This paper investigates the importance of including paranasal sinuses in the computational modeling of the nasal airflow. Three dimensional models of human nasal airway with and without including paranasal sinuses were reconstructed from Computed tomography (CT) axial images of a subject with healthy nasal airway. The reconstruction process was performed using MIMICS® software program. The airw...

BACKGROUND The paranasal sinuses and mastoid air cells vary considerably in size and shape from person to person. The main structures are pneumatic. In this study, we investigated the relationship between right and left sides and evaluated the volume changes according to age and sex. METHODS Of all patients attending the radiology department, 91 cases without paranasal sinuses and mastoid air...

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS Endoscopic sinus surgery is an accepted treatment for medically recalcitrant chronic rhinosinusitis. Effective saline douching may improve long-term outcomes of chronic rhinosinusitis but is often impaired by postoperative ostial stenosis. The aim of this study is to determine a critical ostial size at which douching solution reliably enters the sinus cavities. STUDY DESI...

The number of screening examinations of the sinuses performed with CT has markedly increased owing to the widespread and increasing use of endoscopic sinonasal surgery. We reviewed scans from 500 patients who had screening CT examinations of the sinuses for preendoscopic evaluation of inflammatory sinonasal disease to better define an optimal imaging protocol. Three aspects of direct coronal im...

Two cases of recurrent perianal suppuration are described in which the underlying pathology is believed to be pilonidal sinus disease affecting the perianal skin directly. This has given rise to intersphincteric fibrosis and, in one case, a subcutaneous track almost completely encircling the anus. The pathogenesis of the condition and its possible relationship to previous surgery are discussed.
