Water-soluble metal-binding polymers in combination with ultrafiltration are shown to be an effective method for selectively removing dilute actinide ions from acidic solutions of high ionic strength, The actinirte-binding properties of commercially available water-soluble polymers and several polymers which have been repotted in the literature were evrduated, The functional groups incorporated...

Major components of suspended particulate matter (PM) are inorganic ions, organic matter (OM), elemental carbon (EC), geological minerals, salt, non-mineral elements, and water. Since oxygen (O) and hydrogen (H) are not directly measured in chemical speciation networks, more than ten weighting equations have been applied to account for their presence, thereby approximating gravimetric mass. Ass...

This study demonstrated the highly efficient degradation of n-hexadecane in soil, realized by alternating bioremediation and electrokinetic technologies. Using an alternating technology instead of simultaneous application prevented competition between the processes that would lower their efficiency. For the consumption of the soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) necessary for bioremediation by e...

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that react with soluble mercuric ions have been produced by injection of BALB/c mice with a hapten-carrier complex designed to maximize exposure of the metal to the immune system. Three hybridomas producing antibodies that reacted with bovine serum albumin (BSA)-glutathione-HgCl, but not with BSA-glutathione, were isolated from the spleen of a mouse given multiple i...

A simple and one-pot method for the synthesis of water-soluble, red-emitting, highly fluorescent gold nanoparticles has been reported using 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (11-MUA) as the protecting group. We found that the fluorescent gold nanoparticles could selectively detect copper ions in aqueous solution, with a limit of detection of about 87 nM.

The phenol-diamide compound, 5-(tert-butyl)-2-hydroxy-N1,N3-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)isophthalamide (), is water-soluble, non-cytotoxic, and capable of both, trapping ROS species and chelating Cu(ii) and Fe(iii) ions; these combined properties confer a protective effect against ROS induced cell death.

Production of soluble full-length nonstructural protein 5B (NS5B) of hepatitis C virus (HCV) has been shown to be problematic and requires the addition of salts, glycerol, and detergents. In an effort to improve the solubility of NS5B, the hydrophobic C terminus containing 21 amino acids was removed, yielding a truncated NS5B (NS5BDeltaCT) which is highly soluble and monodispersed in the absenc...

Humic substances, the dark-colored, natural organic polyelectrolytes that are found in practically all soils, sediments, and natural water, strongly interact with both inorganic and organic pollutants. Inorganic cationic species generally undergo complexation reactions with humic substances. The binding of cations, such as cupric ions, by humic substances often markedly reduces their toxicity t...

A new working principle for detecting inorganic cation binding by water-soluble calix[4]arenes involves the displacement of a fluorescent azoalkane as guest. Fluorescence regeneration is observed for various metal ions, and binding of monovalent cations (alkali and ammonium) to p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene is detected and quantified for the first time.

The contractility of the thread model prepared from the KCIsoluble proteins of the egg and in vivo factors for the contraction are investigated in Hemicentrotus, Anthoddaris, and Pseudocentrotus eggs. The contractility of the thread model induced by metal ions or cystine changes during development in the characteristic pattern of high at the metaphase and low at the monaster and the interkineti...
