The coupling of the breathing and rotational modes of the skyrmionskyrmion system leads to a nucleon-nucleon spin-orbit interaction of short range, as well as to spin-orbit potentials for the transitionsNN → N(1440)N , NN → NN(1440) and NN → N(1440)N(1440). The longest range behaviour of these spin-orbit potentials is calculated in closed form. Preprint HU-TFT-96-57

Strong spin-orbit coupling in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers results in spin-resolvable band structures about the K and K ′ valleys such that the eigenbasis of a two-dimensional quantum dot (QD) in a TMDC monolayer in zero field is described by the Kramers pairs |0〉− = |K ′ ↑〉 , |1〉− = |K ↓〉 and |0〉+ = |K ↑〉 , |1〉+ = |K ′ ↓〉. The strong spin-orbit coupling limits the usefulne...

We propose a scheme which realizes spin-orbit coupling and the quantum spin Hall effect for neutral atoms in optical lattices without relying on near resonant laser light to couple different spin states. The spin-orbit coupling is created by modifying the motion of atoms in a spin-dependent way by laser recoil. The spin selectivity is provided by Zeeman shifts created with a magnetic field grad...

We measure transient spin accumulation in Cu, Ag, and Au by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. The transient spin current is generated by ultrafast demagnetization of a ferromagnetic [Co/Pt] layer, and spin accumulates in an adjacent normal metal, Cu, Ag, or Au by spin diffusion. The magnitude of the Kerr rotation is described by an off-diagonal conductivity tensor that is proportional ...

We report on theoretical investigations of the spin-orbit coupling effects in fluorinated graphene. First-principles density functional calculations are performed for the dense and dilute adatom coverage limits. The dense limit is represented by the single-side semifluorinated graphene, which is a metal with spin-orbit splittings of about 10 meV. To simulate the effects of a single adatom, we a...

The effects of interplay between spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting on weak localization and universal conductance fluctuations in lateral semiconductor quantum dots are analyzed: All possible symmetry classes of corresponding random matrix theories are listed and crossovers between them achievable by sweeping magnetic field and changing the dot parameters are described. We also suggest e...

We study driven by an external electric field quantum orbital and spin dynamics of electron in a one-dimensional double quantum dot with spin-orbit coupling. Two types of external perturbation are considered: a periodic field at the Zeeman frequency and a single half-period pulse. Spin-orbit coupling leads to a nontrivial evolution in the spin and orbital channels and to a strongly spin- depend...

To realize a one-dimensional (1D) system with strong spin-orbit coupling is a big challenge in modern physics, since the electrons in such a system are predicted to exhibit exotic properties unexpected from the 2D or 3D counterparts, while it was difficult to realize genuine physical properties inherent to the 1D system. We demonstrate the first experimental result that directly determines the ...

Research on graphene has revealed remarkable phenomena arising in the honeycomb lattice. However, the quantum spin Hall effect predicted at the K point could not be observed in graphene and other honeycomb structures of light elements due to an insufficiently strong spin-orbit coupling. Here we show theoretically that 2D honeycomb lattices of HgTe can combine the effects of the honeycomb geomet...

We study the effects of dipolar interactions on a Bose-Einstein condensate with synthetically generated Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The dipolar interaction we consider includes terms that couple spin and orbital angular momentum in a way perfectly congruent with the single-particle Rashba coupling. We show that this internal spin-orbit coupling plays a crucial role in the rich ground-state phas...
