OBJECTIVE To report a case of splenic artery aneurysm that ruptured during labor with both maternal and fetal survival. CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION A 33-year-old primigravida at 42 weeks of gestation was admitted to Adan Hospital for induction of labor. Three days after induction, the patient suddenly collapsed and was found to be hypotensive. Abruptio placentae was mistakenly diag...
The purpose of this study was to evaluate outcomes of the endovascular treatment of splenic artery aneurysms (SAAs) and pseudoaneurysms (SAPAs). From April 2003 to December 2009, 12 patients (mean age 46.8 years, range 29-58) with SAAs (n = 9) or SAPAs (n = 3) underwent endovascular treatment. Four patients were asymptomatic and three had ruptured aneurysms. Lesions were in the proximal splenic...
Little exists on treatment for SAAs rupture which may require a fast bleeding control because of the hemodynamic instability and a large perisplenic/peritoneal hematoma. This case shows the use of endovascular clamping and midline laparotomy to perform the splenectomy because of the severe hypotension and the dimension of the lesion.
The authors describe in their paper possibilities of surgical and intervention treatment of an aneurysm of the lienal artery, their advantages and disadvantages. They evaluate the results of treatment of aneurysms of the lienal artery in three patients treated at the Second Surgical Clinic in Brno in 1993-1996. In the first patient the aneurysm was resected concurrently with splenectomy. In the...
A pregnant woman presented to a local hospital with abdominal pain and hemorrhagic shock. Emergency caesarean section ruled out an obstetric cause and revealed a large mass, interpreted as a hematoma, with active bleeding of unknown origin. Because of her poor clinical condition, the patient was admitted to our hospital. Computed tomographic findings were suspicious for bleeding originating fro...
A variety of pathologic changes may be associated with Banti's syndrome. These may include cirrhosis of the liver, splenic vein thrombosis, cavernomatous transformation of the portal vein and aneurysm of the splenic artery. However, a protracted search of the literature revealed no case of fusiform aneurysm of the portal vein as a result of an enlarged, congested spleen and liver cirrhosis. As ...
BACKGROUND Splenic artery aneurysm and pseudoaneurysm are rare pathologies. True aneurysms are usually asymptomatic. Aneurysm rupture occurring in 2-3% of cases results in bleeding into the lesser sack, peritoneal space or adjacent organs typically presenting as abdominal pain and hemodynamic instability. In contrast, pseudoaneurysms are nearly always symptomatic carrying a high risk of rupture...
