BACKGROUND Splenectomy after combined colosplenic trauma or iatrogenic splenic injury during colorectal surgery associates with worse short- and long-term outcomes, including reduced survival in patients with colorectal cancer. Splenic autotransplantation may improve the outcomes of such patients. Omental splenic transplantation is the standard procedure but may be difficult when performing lap...

Studies of splenic function were carried out on patients with sickle-cell diseases by the measurement of the clearance of autologous heat-damaged 99mTc-labelled erythrocytes from circulation and into the spleen, the spleen area by a scintillation scanning, the enumeration of pitted erythrocytes by direct-interference microscopy, and the percentage of irreversibly sickled cells (ISC) and of cell...

Splenic cysts are a rare entity in the Western population and are either true cysts (primary, 25%) or pseudocysts (secondary, 75%) complicating trauma, haemorrhage or infarction. Congenital or simple splenic cysts are the commonest primary cysts and surgery is recommended for cysts larger than 5 cm as these are prone to infection, bleeding or rupture and for symptomatic or complicated cysts. Sp...

Polycythaemia vera is associated with thrombotic phenomenon due to hyperviscosity of blood. Splenic infarction with splenomegaly is a catastrophic complication usually requiring splenectomy. We describe a case of splenic infarction as an initial manifestation of polycythaemia vera which was treated with serial phlebotomies and hydroxyurea alone, without the need for surgery.

We report an unusual case of a giant colonic mucocele following ileo-sigmoid bypass surgery in a patient with advanced adenocarcinoma of the splenic flexure. The formation of a giant colonic mucocele resulted from distal splenic flexure obstruction due to tumour relapse and proximal caecal obstruction due to peritoneal disease with subsequent accumulation of mucus in the closed loop.

Background: Minimally invasive techniques such as Transumbilical Multiport Splenectomy (TUMPS) have begun to take the place of laparoscopy, which is the gold standard for splenectomy. Accessory Spleen (AcS) is an important cause of relapse after surgery for Benign Hematologic Diseases (BHD). We aimed to compare both techniques in the detection of AcS. Methods: 46 patients who underwent either l...
