background: premature ejaculation (pe) is the most common sexual dysfunction compliant in about 35-40% of men younger than 40 years; therefore a study for survey and diagnosis of this disorder is very important. objective: in this study the efficacy of 2 drugs (fluoxetine and citalopram) for treatment of patients suffering from pe is compared. we studied the effectiveness of both drugs in pe wi...

ackground: There is growing evidence that individual differences among depressed patients on electrophysiologic (EEG), neuroim nd neurocognitive measures are predictive of therapeutic response to antidepressant drugs. This study replicates prior find retreatment differences between selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) responders and nonresponders in EEG alpha po symmetry and examines w...

We report a case of a patient with severe hyperacusis, photophobia, and skin hypersensitivity. The patient was initially treated with sound therapy and medical therapy for 4 months and successfully with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and cognitive behavioral therapy which improved her mood and the tolerance for sounds and light.

In this issue of Neuron, Richardson-Jones et al. report on a novel genetic approach to conditionally and specifically dampen the function of the 5-HT(1A) autoreceptor in mice to study its role on the 5-HT system and on the antidepressant-like effect of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) fluoxetine.

Depression pharmacotherapy can be described with weak predictability of individual response. Antidepressants are prescribed based on trial and error, as it is not possible to determine which patients will respond to antidepressants. It would appear that pharmacogenetics is the most promising path towards achieving the goal of individualized therapy. Today, the most commonly prescribed antidepre...

Serotonin initiates various rhythmic behaviors in vertebrates. Previously we have shown that serotonergic neurons innervate the central vocal pathway in the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis). We also discovered that exogenous serotonin applied to isolated brains in vitro activates fictive vocalizations by activating 5-HT(2C)-like receptors. In this study, we examined the location of 5-HT(2C)...

Systemic administration of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) elicits larger increases in serotonin (5-HT) in raphe than in forebrain sites. Because serotonergic neuronal activity is suppressed, the mechanism underlying SSRI-induced increases in extracellular 5-HT is unclear. This study determined whether local infusion of SSRIs also elicited regionally selective increases in extra...

Abstract Indirect agonism has been invoked as part of the mechanism antipsychotic action at dopamine D 2/3 receptors, and more recently a salient neuropharmacological aspect serotonin 5‐HT 2A drug pimavanserin (Pim). We now comment on an article in this volume showing that Pim treatment attenuates deposition Aβ protein brain transgenic Alzheimer's disease model mice. may interfere with by shift...

Patients with frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) present a profound personality change, social misconduct, overeating, and stereotyped behavior. We examined the hypothesis that many of the behavioral symptoms of FTLD will respond to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Sixteen FTLD patients were treated with an SSRI (fluvoxamine maleate) in an open 12-week trial. Treatment res...
