using the nuclear equation of states for a large variety of relativistic and non-relativistic force parameters, we calculate the static and rotating masses and radii of neutron stars. From these equation of states, we evaluate the properties of rotating neutron stars, such as rotational frequencies, moment of inertia, quadrupole deformation parameter, rotational ellipticity and gravitational wa...

To the Editor: In April 2013, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) was first reported (1). Since PEDV was detected, the virus has continued to spread throughout the United States and has now been reported in Mexico and Canada (2). PEDV was first reported in Europe in the 1970s and was later reported in Asia during the 1980s (3,4). PEDV outbreaks in Asia were more acute and severe than the PED...

In October 2009, a novel GII.12 norovirus strain emerged in the United States and caused 16% of all reported norovirus outbreaks during the winter season. Sequence analysis demonstrated a recombinant virus with a P2 region that was largely conserved compared with previously sequenced GII.12 strains.

Epitaxial strain imposed in complex oxide thin films by heteroepitaxy is recognized as a powerful tool for identifying new properties and exploring the vast potential of materials performance. A particular example is LaCoO(3), a zero spin, nonmagnetic material in the bulk, whose strong ferromagnetism in a thin film remains enigmatic despite a decade of intense research. Here, we use scanning tr...

The tetragonal states produced by isotropic pseudomorphic epitaxial strain in the ~001! plane on a tetragonal phase of a crystal are calculated for V, Ti, Rb, Li, K, and Sr from first-principles electronic theory. It is shown that each metal has two tetragonal phases corresponding to minima of the total energy with respect to tetragonal deformations ~and hence are equilibrium phases! and that t...

Combining through-focus high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and hierarchical multiscale simulations consisting of density-functional theory, analytical empirical potentials, and continuum elastic theory we demonstrate the existence of a new dislocation type in GaN. In contrast with all previously identified or suggested dislocation structures in GaN, all core atoms are fully coordi...

We present a practical method for active phase control on a photonic chip that has immediate applications in quantum photonics. Our approach uses strain-optic modification of the refractive index of individual waveguides, effected by a millimeter-scale mechanical actuator. The resulting phase change of propagating optical fields is rapid and polarization-dependent, enabling quantum applications...

We investigate a time-delayed epidemic model for multi-strain diseases with temporary immunity. In the absence of cross-immunity between strains, dynamics of each individual strain exhibit emergence and annihilation of limit cycles due to a Hopf bifurcation of the endemic equilibrium, and a saddle-node bifurcation of limit cycles depending on the time delay associated with duration of temporary...

A multiscale approach was adopted for the calculation of confined states in self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). While results close to experimental data have been obtained with a combination of atomistic strain and tight-binding (TB) electronic structure description for the confined quantum states in the QD, the TB calculation requires substantial computational resources. To allevi...

The ability to fine-tune band gap and band inversion in topological materials is highly desirable for the development of novel functional devices. Here we propose that the electronic properties of a free-standing nanomembrane of topological crystalline insulator (TCI) SnTe and Pb1−xSnx(Se,Te) are highly tunable by engineering elastic strain and controlling membrane thickness, resulting in tunab...
