We describe a system for monitoring and controlling i.v. anaesthesia in rats using burst suppression ratio (BSR) detection in the extradural EEG. After bolus injection, peak BSR values of 95% were achieved with propofol 8 mg kg-1, etomidate 3.5 mg kg-1 and alphaxalone 4.5 mg kg-1. Thiopental 32 mg kg-1 produced a peak BSR of 70% (larger doses were not tolerated). Recovery was fastest with propo...

Periodically in the transport protocol research community, the idea of introducing a burst mitigation strategy is voiced. In this paper we assess the prevalence and implications of bursts in the context of real TCP traffic in order to better inform a decision on whether TCP’s congestion control algorithms need to incorporate some form of burst suppression. After analyzing traffic from three net...

BACKGROUND The tuberomammillary histaminergic neurons are involved in the sedative component of anesthetic action. The nucleus basalis magnocellularis (NBM) in the basal forebrain receives dense excitatory innervation from the tuberomammillary nucleus and is recognized as an important site of sleep-wake regulation. This study investigated whether NBM administration of histaminergic drugs may mo...

BACKGROUND The relationship between measures of drug effect such as bispectral index (BIS) and end-tidal (ET) levels of anaesthetic agents is described by the 'effect site equilibrium half-time', t(1/2)(ke0). There are limited data available on sevoflurane t(1/2)(ke0) during routine anaesthesia and surgery. Preliminary observations suggested t(1/2)(ke0) for the degree of hypnosis as estimated b...

Cholecystokinin (CCK)-mediated actions on intrathalamic rhythmic activities were examined in an in vitro rat thalamic slice preparation. Single electrical stimuli in the thalamic reticular nucleus (nRt) evoked rhythmic activity (1-15 sec duration) in nRt and the adjacent ventrobasal nucleus (VB). Low CCK concentrations (20-50 nM) suppressed rhythmic oscillations in 43% of experiments but prolon...
