We describe a rapid method for calibrating the Technicon AutoAnalyzer colorimeter I. Test solutions of bromphenol blue are recommended for the calibration, in preference to solutions of potassium dichromate, based on considerations of the instrument's working range and of the stray light characteristics of the associated filters.
We describe a procedure for determining thiocyanate in plasma with a Technicon AutoAnalyzer I, modified with a 50-mm tubular flow cell to increase the sensitivity of thiocyanate detection. The procedure is suitable for distinguishing cigarette smokers from non-smokers, the mean for smokers being 151 (SD 43) micromol/L and for non-smokers 62 (SD 19) micromol/L.
A sensitive micro method for the manual estimation of true glucose in 10 mul plasma by an enzymatic technique is described. Protein precipitation is avoided. The method is simple to perform, accurate and precise. Agreement with a glucose oxidase autoanalyzer method is excellent, even with haemolysed and icteric specimens.
