We report a vertical p-i-n thin-film germanium photodetector integrated on 3microm thick large core silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides. The device demonstrates very high external responsivity due to the low fiber coupling loss to the large core waveguides. The germanium width and thickness are carefully designed to achieve high responsivity yet retain high-speed performance. Even with fiber ...

Diffraction characteristics of high-spatial-frequency (HSF) gratings are evaluated for application to polarization-selective computer-generated holograms by the use of two different approaches: second-order effective-medium theory (EMT) and rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA). The reflectivities and the phase differences for TE- and TM-polarized waves are investigated in terms of various inpu...

We demonstrate a polarization-insensitive 2 × thermo-optic switch on 220-nm silicon-on-insulator platform. This device is based balanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer with arms consisting of square-cross-section waveguides. In simulations, the (MZS) exhibits extinction ratios (ERs) > 9.5 dB for transverse electric (TE) and magnetic (TM) polarized modes from 1500 nm to 1600 nm. Experimental result...

Using theorems of Fourier factorization, a recent paper [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 13, 1870 (1996)] has shown that the truncated Fourier series of products of discontinuous functions that were used in the differential theory of gratings during the past 30 years are not converging everywhere in TM polarization. They turn out to be converging everywhere only at the limit of infinitely low modulated grat...

Highly efficient polarization-tuned structural color filters, which are based on a one- dimensional resonant aluminum grating that is integrated with a silicon nitride waveguide, are proposed and demonstrated to feature a broad color palette. For such a metallic grating structure, transmissive color filtering is only feasible for the incident transverse-magnetic (TM) polarization due to its hig...

The design of some optical devices, such as semiconductor optical amplifiers for telecommunication applications, requires polarization-insensitive optical emission at long wavelengths (1300–1550 nm). Self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) typically exhibit ground state optical emissions at wavelengths shorter than 1300 nm with highly polarization-sensitive characteristics, although this ca...

We investigate a two-dimensional low F-number dual micro-axilens array with binary structures based on a rigorous electromagnetic theory. The focal characteristics of a binary dual micro-axilens array (BDMA), including axial performances (focal depth and focal shift) and transverse performances (focal spot size and diffraction efficiency), have been analyzed in detail for different F-numbers, d...

A novel ultra-short polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on a bent directional coupler is proposed by utilizing the evanescent coupling between two bent optical waveguides with different core widths. For the bent directional coupler, there is a significant phase-mismatch for TE polarization while the phase-matching condition is satisfied for TM polarization. Therefore, the TM polarized light ...

Abstract: Polarization splitter (PBS) consisting of a hybrid plasma horizontal slot waveguide (HSW) and silicon nitride vertical (VSW).At suitable HSW VSW widths, the TE polarization modes in are phase-matched, while TM phase mismatched. The results show that PBS achieves an extinction ratio (ER) 35.1 dB insertion loss (IL) 0.34 for mode at 1.55 μm, For mode, reached 40.9 ER 2.65 IL.
