To make bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy less painful and more acceptable in children a short acting anaesthetic ketamine was used in a dose of 1-2 mg/kg body weight intravenously or 4-5 mg/kg intramuscularly. One hundred cases aged 2 to 13 years were studied. The actual procedure time ranged between 20 seconds and 3 minutes, adequate samples were obtained in 80% of children on first ...

AIM To analyse haemopoietic regrowth and residual disease in bone marrow trephine biopsy specimens after treatment for acute leukaemia, using immunohistochemical staining. METHODS Biopsy specimens before and after treatment were studied from patients diagnosed as having acute myeloid or lymphoblastic leukaemia. Specimens after treatment encompassed periods from two to 56 weeks from the start ...
The danger of percutaneous needle biopsy of the lung has been emphasized by the recent report of two additional fatal cases.' The authors review the published fatalities in the English literature, pointing out that they have occurred, except in one case,2 after the use of cutting needles. We have published our own results3 in 18 patients submitted to biopsy with the high speed trephine presente...

A postal survey of adverse events associated with bone marrow biopsy (aspiration biopsy with or without trephine biopsy) was carried out among British Society of Haematology members, between 1995 and 2001. A total of 26 adverse events, including one death directly attributable to the procedure, were reported among an estimated 54 890 biopsies. The most frequent and most serious adverse event wa...
IgD myeloma is a rare disorder with a very poor prognosis. An unusual case is reported where prolonged remission was obtained. Immunohistochemical staining of the bone marrow trephine biopsy specimen proved invaluable in documenting early relapse. It is suggested that immunohistochemistry should be adopted more widely in view of the disparities evident in aspirates and trephines.
A dry tap obtained on bone marrow aspiration is considered a failure to aspirate particles. However, it often related an underlying pathology that hinders successful of hematopoietic cells. In this retrospective analysis, 2768 aspirates and trephine biopsies were reviewed. Of these, 223 patients with aspirations which yielded no particles (dry tap) included in the study. Patients whom adequate ...
We report a case of a bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy (BMATB) associated haematoma in an 85-years old male without any predisposing risk factors. Six days after BMATB, he suffered from a massive thigh and buttock haematoma and a fall in haematocrit. It is important to know that BMATB can have complications aiding early recognition and therapy.
