OBJECTIVES We report on a heterosexual male with sore throat diagnosed as oral Trichomoniasis vaginalis. METHODS A rapid strep test and throat culture were negative. An oropharyngeal swab tested positive for Trichomonas vaginalis using a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT). RESULTS AND CONCLUSION A detailed sexual history and oropharyngeal swab testing enabled the diagnosis of oral Trich...

Isoenzyme electrophoresis was used to study levels of genetic differentiation among strains and clones of Trichomonas gallinae, Trichomonas vaginalis, Tritrichomonas foetus, Tetratrichomonas gallinarum, and Pentatrichomonas hominis. Strain variation was found within T. gallinae, T. vaginalis, and T. foetus, however, levels of enzyme polymorphism were greater in T. gallinae than in T. vaginalis ...

Metronidazole, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved drug against trichomoniasis, is nonspermicidal and thus cannot offer pregnancy protection when used vaginally. Furthermore, increasing resistance of Trichomonas vaginalis to 5-nitro-imidazoles is a cause for serious concern. On the other hand, the vaginal spermicide nonoxynol-9 (N-9) does not protect against sexually transmitted dise...

AIMS To screen Trichomonas vaginalis isolates from South Africa for the presence of a small double stranded RNA virus designated T vaginalis virus (TVV). METHODS TVV was detected by simultaneous extraction of DNA and RNA, and its presence confirmed by electron microscopy and nuclease digestions. RESULTS TVV was detected in 59 of 72 (81.9%) isolates. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate a po...

Vaginal exudates from 105 patients were examined by direct wet-mount microscopy and acridine orange stain for the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis. Both procedures demonstrated greater than 90% agreement in both sensitivity and specificity. When specimens can be examined immediately after collection, it appears that wet-mount microscopy is almost as sensitive as acridine orange staining for de...

The genetic epidemiology of Trichomonas vaginalis is poorly understood at present. The recent release of the organism's genome sequence opens the way to investigation of polymorphic markers allowing strain identification. We here report a preliminary analysis of microsatellite loci in T. vaginalis and show that this approach holds promise for future studies of infection transmission and organis...

CONTEXT Vaginitis is one of the principal motives that lead women to seek out an obstetrician or gynecologist. Bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis and trichomoniasis are responsible for 90% of the cases of infectious vaginitis. OBJECTIVE To verify the frequency of the three main causative agents of vaginitis, Trichomonas vaginalis, Candida sp and Gardnerella vaginalis, in four different decades ...

PCR analysis in two unusual occurrences of trichomoniasis, trichomonal empyema due to Trichomonas tenax and Trichomonas vaginalis in an infant urine sample, allowed us to obtain rapid and accurate trichomonad species identification. The weak sensitivity of wet preparations and the low viability of the flagellates can be remedied by the PCR method.

The impact of the viability of Trichomonas vaginalis in urine on wet mount, culture, and PCR methods was assessed. To minimize the chance of false-negative results, urine specimens should be processed within 30 min of specimen collection and maintained at 37 degrees C, since temperature appears to affect the viability of Trichomonas.
