Mortality and serious long-term sequelae still occur in about 50% of patients with tuberculous meningitis. The frequency and the clinical features of neurological and systemic complications were determined in a retrospective review of 104 patients with tuberculous meningitis. Complications occurred in 81 patients (78%). The most common complications were: hyponatraemia 49%, hydrocephalus 42%, s...
Cerebral salt wasting syndrome (CSWS) is characterized by severe natriuresis and volume depletion in the presence of cerebral pathology. In literature, there are few reports about tuberculous meningitis and cerebral CSWS. In this article, we report two tuberculous meningitis cases with CSWS and present a review of the literature on this topic. Cerebral salt wasting diagnosis was based on hypona...
The diagnostic value of adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity was studied to evaluate its use in the differential diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis in the local setting. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from 119 patients with meningitis and other conditions with central nervous system symptoms were collected and ADA activity determined by the colorimetric method of Guisti read at 628 nm. The CSF was al...
Estimation of Lactate Dehydrogenase Activity in cerebrospinal fluid in different types of meningitis
Objective: Meningitis is life-threatening condition and examination of the Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) may not give a precise diagnosis and prognosis of different types of meningitis. Bacterial meningitis is still a very common problem especially in many developing countries. The aims of study are to estimate the importance and significance of Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH), protein...
The data related to the distribution of other focal infections in central nervous system (CNS) infection patients is inconsistent in medical literature. Infectious Diseases International Research Initiative (ID-IRI) has been carrying on multicenter and multinational studies since 2008 and provided bulk of information on pneumococcal meningitis, brucellar meningitis, tuberculous meningitis, and ...
BACKGROUND Adjunctive dexamethasone increases survival from tuberculous meningitis, but the underlying mechanism is unclear. We aimed to determine the effect of dexamethasone on cerebral MRI changes and their association with intracerebral inflammatory responses and clinical outcome in adults treated for tuberculous meningitis. METHODS Cerebral MRI was undertaken, when possible, at diagnosis ...
A 5 year old girl with tuberculous meningitis developed progressive visual failure during in-patient anti-tuberculous chemotherapy due to an ophthochiasmatic tuberculoma. This was successfully managed by prolonged high-dose corticosteroids and continued anti-tuberculous therapy resulting in complete visual and psychosocial recovery.
This review focuses on recent advances of topical interest regarding the diagnosis and treatment of common causes of bacterial meningitis occurring in children beyond the neonatal period. Tuberculous meningitis is beyond the scope of this review.
Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is the most severe form of tuberculosis. Microbiological confirmation is rare, and treatment is often delayed, increasing mortality and morbidity. The GeneXpert MTB/RIF test was evaluated in a large cohort of patients with suspected tuberculous meningitis. Three hundred seventy-nine patients presenting with suspected tuberculous meningitis to the Hospital for Tropic...
