The present study compared differences in subjective and objective performance in completely-in-the-canal (CIC) hearing aids with conventional uniform 1.5 mm parallel vents and another with a reverse horn vent where the diameter increased from 1.5 mm on the lateral faceplate to 3 mm on the medial opening of the hearing aid. Nine hearing-impaired persons with a high-frequency hearing loss partic...

The paper describes CFD modelling of lean hydrogen mixture deflagrations. Large eddy simulation (LES) premixed combustion model developed at the University of Ulster to account phenomena related to large-scale deflagrations was adjusted specifically for lean hydrogen-air flames. Experiments by Kumar (2006) on lean hydrogen-air mixture deflagrations in a 120 m vessel at initially quiescent condi...

We developed a knowledge-based system, VIE-VENT, for monitoring and therapy planning of the artificial ventilation of newborn infants. Clinical and textbook knowledge were implemented in VIE-VENT’s knowledge base. Therapy planning was based on transcutaneously and invasively determined blood gas measurements and on clinical observations. After the selection of appropriate input parameters, meas...

Dispersal ability plays a key role in the maintenance of species in spatially and temporally discrete niches of deep-sea hydrothermal vent environments. On the basis of population genetic analyses in the eastern Pacific vent fields, dispersal of animals in the mid-oceanic ridge systems generally appears to be constrained by geographical barriers such as trenches, transform faults, and microplat...

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents and cold seeps are submarine springs where nutrient-rich fluids emanate from the sea floor. Vent and seep ecosystems occur in a variety of geological settings throughout the global ocean and support food webs based on chemoautotrophic primary production. Most vent and seep invertebrates arrive at suitable habitats as larvae dispersed by deep-ocean currents. The recen...

Here, we report the 3.1-Mb draft genome sequence of Psychrobacter piscatorii strain LQ58, isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent on the East Pacific Rise. The sequence will provide further insight into the environmental adaptation of psychrotolerant bacteria and the development of novel cold-active enzymes for industrial application.

To quantify the potential enhancement of naturally-occurring 210Po and 210Pb that may result from the high sulfur-reducing and sulfur-oxidizing regimes associated with hydrothermal vents, sinking particles from both inside and outside vent areas and benthic molluscs grazing on or living near bacterial mats in the vent zone were collected off Milos Island (Aegean Sea) and analyzed for their 210P...

Since the initial discovery of hydrothermal vents in 1977, these 'extreme' chemosynthetic systems have been a focus of interdisciplinary research. The Okinawa Trough (OT), located in the semi-enclosed East China Sea between the Eurasian continent and the Ryukyu arc, hosts more than 20 known vent sites but all within a relatively narrow depth range (600-1880 m). Depth is a significant factor in ...

The MESSENGER mission revealed, for the first time, conclusive evidence of explosive volcanism on Mercury. Several previous works have cataloged the appearance and location of explosive volcanism on the planet using a variety of identifying characteristics, including vent presence and deposit color as seen in multispectral image mosaics. We present here a comprehensive catalog of vents of likel...

The Von Damm Vent Field (VDVF) is located on the flanks of the Mid-Cayman Spreading Centre, 13 km west of the axial rift, within a gabbro and peridotite basement. Unlike any other active vent field, hydrothermal precipitates at the VDVF comprise 85-90% by volume of the magnesium silicate mineral, talc. Hydrothermal fluids vent from a 3-m high, 1-m diameter chimney and other orifices at up to 21...
