A compact fiber laser is demonstrated with use of a Gires-Tournois compensator and a short length (2-4 cm-long) of highly doped ytterbium (Yb) fiber providing net anomalous group-velocity dispersion. With use of a novel semiconductor saturable absorber mirror based on GaInNAs structure, self-started 1.5-ps-pulse mode-locked operation was obtained at 1023 nm with a repetition rate of 95 MHz. A m...

We report the use of cross-polarized wave generation to perform both pulse shortening and temporal cleaning of a high-energy ytterbium-doped fiber-based femtosecond laser system. The nonlinear processes allow both a highly efficient nonlinear conversion of 20% and a large compression ratio of 3.5, with inherently improved coherent and incoherent contrasts. This results in the generation of 37 μ...

wood-cutting performance of a 1 kW ytterbium fibre laser-a recent, compact, flexible, efficient laser system. The cutting process is characterized, taking as a reference the effects of the principal process factors. A quantification of energy consumption during the cutting process, critical for scale-up, is provided.

A high-average power, laser-diode-pumped, picosecond-pulse regenerative chirped pulse amplifier was developed by using the thin-rod Yb:YAG laser architecture. An average output power of 20 W was achieved at a repetition rate of 100 kHz with an output pulse width of 2 ps. 2008 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (140.3280) Lasers, amplifiers, (140.3615) Lasers, ytterbium, (140.3480) Lasers, ...
