Sodium depletion was induced in dogs to raise plasma renln activity (PRA) from 1.11 to 26.48 ng/ml/hr. Little overall change in blood pressure (BP) occurred, but cardiac output (CO) and central venous pressure fell, while total peripheral resistance and heart rate (HR) increased. A nonapeptide converting enzyme inhibitor (CEI) produced a fall in BP which was linearly related to log. PRA; the in...

In bacteria, the biosynthetic pathway for the hydroxymethyl pyrimidine moiety of thiamine shares metabolic intermediates with purine biosynthesis. The two pathways branch after the compound aminoimidazole ribotide. Past work has shown that the first common metabolite, phosphoribosyl amine (PRA), can be generated in the absence of the first enzyme in purine biosynthesis, PurF. PurF-independent P...

INTRODUCTION The accuracy and practicality of PCR-restriction endonuclease analysis (PRA) for rapid identification of pathogenic rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM) isolates were evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHOD PRA identification using an amplified 439-bp segment (amplicon) of the 65-kDa heat shock protein gene was compared to identification by conventional methods, for 39 clinically significa...

During a 2-year period, 31 cases of a hereditary retinal degeneration in dogs bred in India were found mainly suspected for progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) with typical history of initial nyctalopia followed by hemeralopia. Out of 31 PRA suspected dogs, 8 dogs (26%) were from the age group of 1-5 years, 15 (48%) 6-10 years and the rest (26%) 11-15 years. The most predominant breed was Spitz (...

BACKGROUND The measurement of renin activity is complicated by difficulties in the quantification of angiotensin 1 (Ang1), the product of the renin-catalyzed reaction. We report an HPLC-electrospray-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS) method for the quantification of Ang1 as a measure of plasma renin activity (PRA). METHODS After incubation (37 degrees C for 3 or 18 h), samples were pre...

Fourteen male patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension have been studied with regard to plasma renin activity (PRA) after acute and prolonged /?adrenergic blockade with propranolol. Initial PRA was determined after four weeks of placebo treatment. Before propranolol was given PRA rose in response to 10 min of 45" head-up tilt from 151.7 ng/100 ml/h to 248.7 ng/100 ml/h ( p < 0.01)....

PCR-restriction endonuclease analysis (PRA) was used for direct identification of Mycobacterium haemophilum in clinical specimens from immunocompromised patients. PRA correctly identified M. haemophilum in four smear-positive specimens. Direct identification by PRA takes 2 to 3 working days compared to the 3 to 5 weeks required for culture isolation and identification by conventional methods.

BACKGROUND Four recent reports revealed differences in survival rates among treated cardiovascular patients taking renin-angiotensin system-blocking drugs. Patients with higher on-treatment plasma renin activity (PRA) levels died sooner of cardiovascular mortality than those with lower levels. We investigated whether excessive sodium depletion might have induced the higher PRA levels and contri...

PURPOSE ERα and PR levels are critical determinants for breast cancer prognosis and response to endocrine therapy. Although PR is known to be silenced by methylation of its promoter, few studies have correlated methylation with PR levels and outcome in breast cancer. There is only one previous small study comparing methylation of the two PR isoforms, PRA and PRB, which are expressed from differ...
