BACKGROUND To the authors' knowledge, limited data are available from Mediterranean populations concerning risk factors for malignant melanoma. A few Italian case-control studies have produced conflicting results regarding the association between malignant melanoma and pigmentary traits, sunburns, and melanocytic nevi. METHODS A case-control study was conducted within the framework of the Ita...
Melanocytic nevi are subject to change with age in both clinical and histopathologic findings. In 1991, Cho et al. first reported three cases of lobulated intradermal nevi and suggested their cases represented an unusual form of regressing melanocytic nevus. Herein we report four cases of lobulated intradermal nevus and review previous literature.
Oral pigmented lesions are uncommon and congenital melanocytic nevi are especially rare. We report a case of a patient with multiple congenital melanocytic nevi including a palatal lesion. This is reported to add to the scant literature that exists on this subject. Prognosis and management are discussed.
Proliferative nodules can occasionally arise on congenital and acquired melanocytic nevi. At first sight their clinical and pathologic features cause alert to both dermatologist and dermatopathologist. However, proliferative nodules are typically benign, regression is common and there is minimum risk of malignization. We present a new case of proliferative nodule in melanocytic nevi with featur...
Desmoplastic melanocytic nevi can be difficult to distinguish from desmoplastic melanoma. The presence of lymphocytic aggregates in association with a sclerosing melanocytic proliferation is commonly regarded as a feature in support of a diagnosis of desmoplastic melanoma. However, the finding is not specific for melanoma. Herein we report six cases of sclerosing melanocytic nevi with associate...
Acral skin is the most prevalent site of malignant melanoma in non-Caucasian populations. On acral skin, other various kinds of pigmented lesions are also detected. Particularly, melanocytic nevus is commonly seen on acral volar skin; approximately 10% of Japanese have a nevus on their soles. Prognosis of acral melanoma is still generally poor because of delayed detection in the advanced stages...
Recent studies have demonstrated that cathepsin K seems to be a powerful marker in identifying the microphthalmia associated transcription factor (MITF) family tumors such as renal perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasms (PEComas), alveolar soft part sarcoma, and translocation-associated renal cell carcinomas. However, the expression of cathepsin K in melanocytic lesions has not been well chara...
Cases of GMN associated with small disseminated nevi involving the entire body have been documented with historical figures published in many articles and textbooks [4–9] and have also been reported in more recent publications [10–13] . So far, the associated small nevi have usually been categorized as ‘satellite lesions’ [4, 12, 13] . Admittedly, true satellite lesions are often noted. As a ru...
BRAF(V600E) mutations are frequent in melanomas originating from intermittently sun-exposed skin and also in common acquired melanocytic nevi, suggesting that BRAF mutation is an early event in melanocytic neoplasia. All neoplastic melanocytes within such a nevus would be expected to carry the BRAF mutation, and thus we evaluated the frequency of cells with BRAF(V600E) mutations within acquired...
BACKGROUND Digital computer analysis of dermatoscopical images has been reported to facilitate the differential diagnosis of pigmented skin lesions in recent years. OBJECTIVE The aim of our study was to perform digital computer analysis of a set of different melanocytic lesions and compare the objective results. METHODS The set of 260 melanocytic lesions (150 excised difficult cases (46 mel...
