Acute bacterial meningitis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in children. To estimate the incidence of meningitis caused by all types of bacteria in Thai children under five years of age, data were collected using a rapid assessment tool (RAT) and analyzed. Clinical and laboratory data from suspected meningitis cases for a one-year period were retrospectively collected from 5 sel...

BACKGROUND Previous studies have demonstrated the value of serum procalcitonin (PCT) as a marker of bacterial infection, as well as the rapid decrease in its concentration with appropriate antibiotic treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the variation in serum PCT levels over time during the treatment of acute bacterial meningitis (ABM) in adults. METHODS In this prospective analy...

INTRODUCTION The pathogenesis of bacterial meningitis due to Streptococcus pneumoniae is still unclear. Despite early treatment with antibiotics, its morbidity and mortality is still high. MATERIAL AND METHODS Streptococcus pneumoniae induced rat meningitis models were taken and divided into 2 groups; control (C) and meningitis (M). Western blot was used to detect toll like receptor 4 (TLR4),...

Gas-containing spinal epidural abscesses are uncommon. Moreover, acute spinal epidural abscesses rarely complicate bacterial meningitis in adults. Here, we report a rare case of a gas-containing cervical epidural abscess accompanying bacterial meningitis. In spite of aggressive fluid and continuous antibiotic therapy after the isolation of Streptococcus anginosus and Streptococcus constellatus ...
