We have monitored the in vitro sensitivities of Plasmodium falciparum isolates predeployment and during the deployment of artesunate plus amodiaquine treatment in Mlomp, Casamance (southwestern Senegal) during 2000 to 2004. Parasites remained susceptible to both drugs. Chloroquine resistance levels were high but stable. Quinine continues to be effective.
Background: Cancer is one of the foremost contributors to global disease bur den and constantly requires new therapeutic options. The development drugs has failed keep up with its incidence. Hence, drug reprofiling strategies are emerging as novel study aimed evaluate anti-cancer activity amodiaquine (anti-malarial drug) using a combination murine human breast cancer cell lines Methods: Amodiaq...
BACKGROUND Artemisinin-based combination therapies are rapidly being adopted for the treatment of malaria in Africa; however, there are limited data on their safety and efficacy among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected populations. METHODS We compared malaria treatment outcomes between cohorts of HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected children in Uganda who were observed for 18 and 29 month...
BACKGROUND Artemisinin-based combination treatments (ACTs) or intravenous artesunate are used in over 100 countries for uncomplicated or severe falciparum malaria. Although intravenous artesunate may cause delayed haemolytic anaemia, there is little evaluation of the temporal changes in haematocrit following ACTs. METHODS Clinical and parasitological parameters were measured before and follow...
Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) are the cornerstone for the treatment of malaria. However, confirmed resistance to artemisinins in South-East Asia, and reports of reduced efficacy of ACTs raise major concerns for malaria treatment and control. Without new drugs to replace artemisinins, it is essential to define dosing strategies that maximize therapeutic efficacy, limit the sprea...
AbstractPoor-quality medicines are a major problem for health-care systems in resource-poor settings as identifying falsified medicines requires a complex laboratory infrastructure such as a Medicines Quality Control Laboratory. We report here an evaluation of a low-cost, handheld near-infrared spectrometer (NIRS) device by analyzing a library of artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) medi...
AIM to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a fixed combination of artemether-lumefantrine for likely use against failures of the artesunate-amodiaquine first line therapy. METHODS the study was an open label single arm uncontrolled trial. we evaluated the safety and efficacy of standard artemether-lumefantrine therapy in 59 subjects with uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum o...
