Historically, the goal of forest inventories has been to determine the extent of the timber resource. Predictions of how the resource was changing were made by comparing differences between successive inventories. The general view of the associated sample design was with selection probabilities based on land area observed at a discrete point in time. Time was not considered to be part of the sa...

This study uses survey data on several hundred automotive suppliers in North America to evaluate the determinants of inventory levels in high-volume discrete parts manufacturing. We assess the magnitude of raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods inventories, as well as production lot sizes and through-put times. Results are broadly consistent with the EOQ formula and related models o...

Common vowel inventories of languages tend to be better dispersed in the space of possible vowels than less common or unattested inventories. The present research explored the hypothesis that functional factors underlie this preference. Connectionist models were trained on different inventories of spoken vowels, taken from a naturalistic corpus. The first experiment showed that networks trained...

BACKGROUND The consumption of foods, especially by children, may be determined by the types of foods that are available in the home. Because most studies use a single point of data collection to determine the types of foods in the home, which can miss the change in availability when resources are not available, the primary objective of this study was to determine the extent to which the weekly ...

This paper provides a simple dynamic optimization model of durable goods inventories. Closed-form solutions are derived in a general equilibrium environment with imperfect information and serially correlated shocks. The model is then applied to scrutinize some popular conjectures regarding the causes of the volatility reduction of GDP since 1984. JEL Classification: E22, E23, E32.

It is widely believed in the literature that inventory ‡uctuations are destabilizing to the economy. This paper re-assesses this view by developing an analyticallytractable general-equilibrium model of inventory dynamics based on a precautionary stockout-avoidance motive. The model’s predictions are broadly consistent with the U.S. business cycle and key features of inventory behavior, includin...

Inventories play an important role in business cycles. Inventory build-ups add momentum to the economy during expansions, while inventory liquidations sap economic strength during recessions. In addition, because inventory fluctuations are notoriously difficult to predict, they present considerable uncertainty in assessing the economic outlook. The role of inventories in shaping the current out...

Abstract. Efficient and robust landslide mapping volume estimation is essential to rapidly infer spatial distribution, quantify the role of triggering events on landscape changes, assess direct secondary landslide-related geomorphic hazards. Many efforts have been made develop methods, based 2D satellite or aerial images, constrain empirical volume–area (V–A) relationship which, in turn, would ...
