We tested 259 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates and 2 USA300 ATCC type strains for susceptibility to bacitracin and neomycin contained in over-the-counter antibacterial ointments. Resistance to both bacitracin and neomycin was found only in USA300. The use of over-the counter antimicrobial drugs may select for the USA300 clone.

introduction: thymbra spicata (t. spicata) is a conventional medicinal herb which is commonly used in the folklore medicine system of iran. aim of the study was to assess the antibacterial activity of the essential oil and hudroalcholic extract of the plant t. spicata on some important bacteria. materials & methods: the essential oil and extract of t. spicata were obtained by hydrodistillation ...

Purpose: In this study, we have focused on antibacterial effect of newly synthesized thiazole, imidazole and tetrahydropyrimidine derivatives in Iran on listeria monocytogenes. Materials and Methods: For evaluation of antibacterial effect, the disk diffusion method was applied to measure the growth inhibition zone diameter and broth micro dilution was performed to determine the minimum inhib...

SUSCEPTIBILITY TESTS Antibacterial susceptibility testing is not necessary for every case in veterinary medicine because the majority of cases can be treated empirically. But performed properly, antibiotic susceptibility results are helpful to select proper antibacterial therapy for patients with refractory infections, seriously ill animals, or when resistant strains of bacteria are suspected. ...

The incidence of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections is increasing globally and the need to understand the underlying mechanisms is paramount to discover new therapeutics. The efflux pumps of Gram-negative bacteria have a broad substrate range and transport antibiotics out of the bacterium, conferring intrinsic multidrug resistance (MDR). The genomes of pre- and posttherapy MDR clinical is...

Emerging antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria like Mycobacterium sp., poses a threat to human health and therefore calls for the development of novel antibacterial strategies. We have recently discovered that bacterial membrane peptides, such as KdpF, possess anti-virulence properties when overproduced in pathogenic bacterial species. Overproduction of the KdpF peptide in Mycobacterium ...

BACKGROUND Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae are the most common causative agents of respiratory tract infections (RTIs). The increase in resistance to current antibacterial agents highlights the need to monitor the resistance pattern of these bacterial pathogens. METHODOLOGY In this study, we assessed the antibacterial suscept...

Nosocomial infections result in considerable morbidity and mortality among neonates, especially in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Previous studies have found an incidence of nosocomial blood stream infection (NBSI) in NICUs ranging from 5.2 to 30.4%.1 The present study was carried out to investigate the etiology of NBSI in NICU and anti-microbial resistance (AMR) of causative organisms....

The antibacterial susceptibility to frequently prescribed antibiotics of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated from the pediatric patients with acute respiratory infectious diseases was investigated in a study of three medical institutions in Korea. Total 143 clinical isolates of S. pneumoniae were available for susceptibility tests between May 2003 and July 2007. Antimicrobial susceptibility data ...

Resistance of uropathogenic bacteria to antibiotics is an increasing problem in primary health care. The aim of this study was to evaluate antibacterial susceptibility testing of uropathogenic bacteria when performed in general practice. Urine specimens with a known quantity of typically uropathogenic bacteria were sent to 25 general practices. The predictive values of testing a bacterial strai...
