Gold had been considered to be an extremely inert metal, but recently it was found that nanometer-sized gold particles on metal-oxide supports acted as catalysts for simple organic reactions, such as oxidation and hydrogenation, even at or below room temperature. Herein, we report that gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) of zero oxidation state (Au0) are catalytically active for a C--C bond-forming reac...

In the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid as catalyst the domino reaction of arylamines, methyl propiolates and aromatic aldehydes in ethanol proceeded smoothly to give polysubstituted 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines in moderate yields. The reaction is believed to involve the Povarov reaction of in situ generated β-enamino ester with the in situ formed aromatic imine.

The aim of this study was to determine volatile compounds in dry dog foods and their possible influence on sensory aromatic profile. Grain-free dry dog foods were compared to dry dog foods manufactured with grain, but also with different protein sources for their aromatic volatiles. Solid-phase microextraction/gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was used to determine the aromatic compounds pre...

A new organocatalyzed method is developed for Baylis–Hillman reactions of cyclohex-2-enone with various aromatic aldehydes in the presence of water and catalytic quantities of triethylamine. All reactions take place at room temperature and relatively good yields of various products are obtained within a time frame which does not exceed 24 hours. The mild reaction conditions used in the present ...

Cell suspensions of Methylosinus trichosporium oxidized the aromatic alcohols benzyl alcohol, vanillyl alcohol, and veratryl alcohol to the corresponding aldehydes, and with the exception of vanillyl alcohol, the aldehydes were further oxidized to the corresponding aromatic acids. No other transformation was observed, and the methoxyl moieties attached to the aromatic nucleus remained intact. M...

WHEN aldehydes are fed to animals, the -CHO group is either reduced to -CH20H or oxidized to -COOH. It can be stated broadly that those aldehydes undergoing biological reduction are aliphatic in nature, whilst those oxidized to the corresponding acid are aromatic.2 Examples of the former are chloral [Musculus & Mering, 1875; Mering, 1882], butyl chloral [Mering, 1882] and bromal [Maraldi, 1903]...

The organocatalytic behavior of N-heterocyclic carbenes in the aerobic oxidation of aromatic aldehydes to esters with boronic acids has been explored. This transition metal-free protocol allows access to a wide variety of aromatic esters in good to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions.
