N-Methylbenzylammonium fluorochromate(VI) (MBAFC) is easily synthesized by addition of N-methylbenzylamine to an aqueous solution of CrO3 and HF. MBAFC shows selectivity in the oxidation of aryl alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes and ketones under mild conditions. The durability, ease of work up and efficiency of MBAFC are considerably increased upon its absorption on silica gel.

Primary amino acids are found to be good enantioselective catalysts for the direct asymmetric Mannich reaction between 2-amino acetophenone and aldehydes. The 2-aryl-2,3-dihydro-4-quinoline products are obtained in moderate to good yields and good to high enantioselectivities with 10 mol% of the primary amino acid catalyst under mild reaction conditions.

A series of 4-aryl-6-methyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrano[3,2-c]quinolin-2,5(6H)-diones were synthesized via the three-component reactions of aromatic aldehydes, 4-hydroxy-1-methylquinolin-2(1H)-one, and Meldrum's acid catalyzed by L-proline. The structures of the products were identified by spectroscopic analysis. A mechanism for this three-component reaction catalyzed by L-proline was proposed.
