The amino acid pattern in the ascites of 79 dogs was examined. The concentration of glutamine in neoplastic ascites is significantly lower than in cardial effusions. In contrast, glutamate is significantly higher in neoplastic ascites than in cardial ascites. Using an arbitrary discrimination value of 0.28 for the glutamate/glutamine ratio, purulent or cardial ascites are easily differentiated,...

Acellular fraction of ascites might play an active role in tumor development. Nevertheless the mechanisms involved in the tumor-modulating properties are still controversial. Here, we demonstrate that malignant ascites from 8 patients with epithelial ovarian cancer did not influence proliferative or invasive properties of ovarian cancer cells, but promoted H2O2-induced apoptosis and increased s...

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to determine risk factors for development of malignant ascites and its prognostic significance in patients with pancreatic cancer. METHODS A prospective database was queried to identify patients with pancreatic cancer who develop ascites. Stage at presentation, size, and location of primary tumor, treatment received and length of survival after onset o...

We describe a case of an abdominal pregnancy which presented in the first trimester with rapid accumulation of blood stained ascites. The ascites resolved completely following surgical removal of a gestational sac from the peritoneal cavity. The pathophysiology of ascites in this case may be similar to that in cases of ascites in other non-malignant gynaecological conditions.

The most common complication to chronic liver failure is ascites. The formation of ascites in the cirrhotic patient is caused by a complex chain of pathophysiological events involving portal hypertension and progressive vascular dysfunction. Since ascites formation represents a hallmark in the natural history of chronic liver failure it predicts a poor outcome with a 50% mortality rate within 3...

The objective of this paper was to study the anti-Ehrlich ascites carcinoma effect of purified toad venom extract and its mechanism. Mouse model of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma was established with cisplatin as the control to observe the inhibitory effect of purified toad venom extract on malignant peritoneal effusion in mice. The results showed that compared with the control group, ascites volume...

Chylous ascites, or chylaskos, is a rare form of ascites characterized by a milky-appearing fluid containing high levels of triglycerides. Its incidence ranges from 1 in 20,000 to 1 in 187,000 admissions at large tertiary referral hospitals. Therapeutic interventions and trauma are well-known causes of chylous ascites. In a cohort of 1,103 patients undergoing abdominal surgery, the incidence of...

Ascites is a metabolic disorder of modern broilers that is distinguished by cardiopulmonary insufficiency in the face of intense oxygen demands of rapidly growing tissues. Broilers with ascites exhibit sustained elevation of pulmonary arterial pressure and right ventricular hypertrophy, the end result of which is heart failure. It has been shown that mitochondrial function is impaired in broile...

The splanchnic and systemic hemodynamics of 14 patients with refractory ascites were studied and were compared to those of 15 patients with ascites responding to medical treatment. Among the 14 patients, 10 were grade B and 4 C, according to the Pugh classification. Of the 15 patients, 5 were Pugh B and 10 C. In patients with refractory ascites, free hepatic venous pressure was significantly hi...

Patient selection and survival after peritoneovenous shunting for nonmalignant ascites was assessed in 30 patients undergoing 44 peritoneovenous shunting procedures over a 5-year period. Indications for peritoneovenous shunting included refractory ascites alone, refractory ascites complicated by hepatorenal syndrome, and nonrefractory but recurrent ascites. Fifty-six percent of shunting procedu...
