Left Atrial Myxomas are notorious for their varied presentations. We describe one such case which initially presented with hemiparesis and seizures and was diagnosed as cerebral infarction and treated accordingly and decompression craniotomy with hinge flap was done for raised ICP and impending brain herniation. The main cause was a left atrial myxoma, which was diagnosed only in follow up. The...
A case of myxoma of the mitral valve is reported. The clinical features were indistinguishable from left atrial myxoma with prolapse through the mitral valve. Because of the known tendency for these tumours to recur it was treated by wide excision which necessitated replacement of the mitral valve.
A 40 year-old athletic woman presented with worsening dyspnea on exertion over the preceding several months. Chest radiograph showed borderline cardiomegaly and subsequent echocardiography demonstrated a 5.0-cm left atrial mass as well as left-to-right interatrial shunting through a patent foramen ovale. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging was performed, which demonstrated signal characteristics...
Cardiac myxoma represents the most common primary cardiac neoplasm, accounting for nearly 75% of benign cardiac tumor. Tumor embolisms occur in 30% to 40% of patients with myxoma, and half of these are cerebral arteries. To our knowledge, this is the first published report of multiregional tumor embolizations except for cerebral artery and Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in patients with left atrial m...
Left atrial myxomas are a rare but well known cause of cerebrovascular accidents in young people. Cerebral embolism is the most common cause of cerebral ischemic stroke. The intracranial aneurysm is rarely associated with myxoma. We report the case of a patient who had an operation of PICA aneurysm due to subarachnoid hemorrhage ten months before the discovery of the large left atrial myxoma. F...
A second recurrence of an excised nonfamilial cardiac myxoma is rare. Myxomatous cerebral aneurysms as a complication of cardiac myxomas are equally rare. A unique case of a patient with a total of 4 myxomas over a 20-year interval is presented. Her most recent presentation was a second recurrence of a left atrial myxoma, a de novo right atrial myxoma, and multiple cerebral myxomatous aneurysms...
Recurrence of cardiac myxoma is a rare condition, observed in about 3% of patients in sporadic cases, although it is more frequent in familial ones. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain such recurrence, and the importance of increased vascularization as a facilitating feature is the subject of debate. The authors report the case of a non-familial right atrial myxoma, unusual for bot...
We have analyzed the genesis of physical signs in a case of prolapsing left atrial myxoma by simultaneous phono-, apex- and M-mode echocardiography. Our findings confirm a direct relationship of tumor movements with notching in the upstroke of the apexcardiogram and with the protodiastolic "tumor plop."
Cardiac myxoma is a benign tumor, but it is known for its space-occupying effect at the site of origin and frequent systemic embolization. This case report highlights a biatrial myxoma of interatrial septum who presented with significant tricuspid valve regurgitation, atrial fibrillation, and cardioembolic stroke of the left parietal lobe, i.e., a biatrial myxoma with triple ripples.
Introduction: Cardiac tumors constitute only 0.2% of all tumors. Primary cardiac tumors occur infrequently with an incidence of 0.0017% to 0.19%, estimated on autopsies performed in non-selected populations. Left atrial myxomas are the most prevalent (75% to 80%) and right atrial are less common (10% to 18%). Surgical excision yields an excellent prognosis and recurrence rate of only 3% with a ...
