Nucleophosmin (B23) was phosphorylated in vitro with [gamma-32P]ATP and a nuclear kinase (type II) purified from HeLa cells. The phosphorylation was inhibited by heparin and by 2,3-diphosphoglycerate. Peptide mapping analysis indicated that the phosphorylation site in vitro was identical to that in vivo. Purified nucleoli have a similar kinase that phosphorylated nucleophosmin at the same site....

The evolutionary mechanisms responsible for the loss of eyes in cave animals are still unresolved. Hypotheses invoking natural selection or neutral mutation have been advanced to explain eye regression. Here we describe comparative molecular and developmental studies in the teleost Astyanax mexicanus that shed new light on this problem. A. mexicanus is a single species consisting of a sighted s...

A group of 61 unselected patients with psoriasis attending a dermatology clinic were studied to determine the prevalence of psoriatic arthritis. On defined criteria arthritis was present in 41.6%. Peripheral arthritis was present in 15.5%, and sacroiliitis in 43%. A strong association of distal interphalangeal arthritis with psoriasis and nail dystrophy was confirmed. Tissue typing showed a str...

Solar Water Disinfection (SODIS) is a simple process used in developing countries to improve the quality of bacteria-contaminated drinking water. A previous study found that phthalate, an aromatic compound released by polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles upon UV-A irradiation, enhanced the germicidal activity of SODIS. In the current study, two possible mechanisms behind this observation we...

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is caused by the loss of functional survival motor neuron 1 (SMN1) protein. This ubiquitously expressed protein is a component of a novel complex immunodetected in both the cytoplasm and the nucleus, which is associated with complexes involved in mRNA splicing, ribosome biogenesis and transcription. Here, we study a mutant protein corresponding to the N-terminal ha...
