The partial-specific volume of proteins is an important thermodynamic parameter required for the interpretation of data in several biophysical disciplines. Building on recent advances in the use of density variation sedimentation velocity analytical ultracentrifugation for the determination of macromolecular partial-specific volumes, we have explored a direct global modeling approach describing...

We use a mesoscopic simulation technique to study the effect of short-ranged interparticle attractions on the steady-state sedimentation of colloidal suspensions. Attractions increase the average sedimentation velocity v(s) compared to the pure hard-sphere case, and for strong enough attractions, a nonmonotonic dependence on the packing fraction phi with a maximum velocity at intermediate phi i...

The viscosity of plasma (PV) was investigated in 27 outpatients with classical or definite rheumatoid arthritis (RA) according to the American Rheumatism Association (ARA) criteria. The measurements showed a significantly raised PV in patients with RA (p less than 10(-5)) compared with a control group. There was a positive correlation between the PV and the blood erythrocyte sedimentation rate ...

Purpose Sedimentaion rate is often used to manage pediatric patients with rheumatologic disease. Most management decisions are dependent on studies which have used Wintrobe or Westergren sedimentation rate methodologies. However, these methods suffer from the need for relatively large amounts of blood and long turn-around times. Determination of sedimentation rate using laser kinetic rate deter...

BACKGROUND Centrifugal "lab on a disk" microfluidics is a promising avenue for developing portable, low-cost, automated immunoassays. However, the necessity of incorporating multiple wash steps results in complicated designs that increase the time and sample/reagent volumes needed to run assays and raises the probability of errors. We present proof of principle for a disk-based microfluidic imm...

It is generally believed that the erythrocyte sedimentation (E.S.R.) is retarded and tends to fall to normal when decompensation occurs in rheumatic fever and other heart diseases known to be associated with elevated values.2' 4, 5, 7. 9 Observations by McGinnis and co-workers,6 who excluded patients who presented evidence of other conditions known to lead to elevation of the E.S.R., however, d...

We investigate the phase behavior of short-range interacting isotropic particles and single-patch Janus particles via simulations of sedimentation equilibrium, which allows for a rapid assessment of the equation of state and phase behavior directly from simulation. The methodology is tested against results by traditional methods and is found to yield good agreement for isotropic interactions. T...

OBJECTIVE To assess the utility of dose frequency adjustment of tocilizumab (TCZ) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS Patients who received TCZ at 3-week (n = 24) or 5-week (n = 61) interval were evaluated. RESULTS Disease Activity Score at 28 joints based on erythrocyte sedimentation rate in the 3-week group significantly improved after 3 administrations at 3-week intervals (from 4.2 to ...

Ninety-four children of the Tobacco Plantation Laborers of the PTP IX, aged between 2 months and 12 years, were investigated on erythrocyte sedimen tation rate with the micro ESR method. In the group of 0 -1 year the mean ESR was: 16,6 mm/hour: 1 -3 years: 20,4 mm/hour; 3 6 years: 19,3 mm/hour; 6 1 2 years: 21,3 mm/hour. The values ranged from 0 36 mm/hour. The results were higher compa red w...

Zeta sedimentation ratio (ZSR) is a simple, rapid and reproducible test which is not influenced by variables like sex and anemia. There is good correlation with Westergren erythrocyte sedimentation ratio (ESR) in normal and hospital population. Limitation of packing force affects the use of the procedure in polycythemia and in patients with ZSR greater than 80%.
