The difficulties related to virus taxonomy have been amplified by recent advances in next-generation sequencing and metagenomics, prompting the field to revisit the question of what constitutes a useful viral classification. Here, taking a challenging classification found in coronaviruses, we argue that consideration of biological properties in addition to sequence-based demarcations is critica...

Abstract We detected severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in an otherwise healthy poodle living with 4 family members who had disease. observed antibodies serum samples taken from the dog, indicating seroconversion. Full-length genome sequencing showed that canine and human viruses were identical, suggesting human-to-animal transmission.

Two distinct types of avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) particles were isolated on sucrose density gradients. The higher density particles banded at 1.18 g/ml, had typical coronavirus morphology and contained all the structural polypeptides and a complete genome. The less dense particles of density 1.13 g/ml appeared to have typical coronavirus morphology, although they were much more fla...

Canine parvovirus (CPV) is the most important enteric virus for dogs and it seems to be undergoing continuous evolution, generating new genetic and antigenic variants throughout the world. The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of CPV variants from 1995 to 2009 and to investigate the circulation of the new variant CPV-2c in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In addition, the clinical featur...
