background chronic hepatitis b virus (hbv) infection has a broad spectrum of manifestation, ranging from silent carrier state to advanced cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. the persistence of hbv dna in serum and hepatocytes of the cirrhotic patient could be detected by molecular techniques in spite of negative hbv serologic markers. conclusions the prevalence of obi was relatively high in...
Hepatocellular carcinoma may develop from multistep carcinogenesis via dysplastic nodules in the cirrhotic liver. The first stage between high-grade dysplastic nodule to overt hepatocellular carcinoma is vaguely nodular, early hepatocellular carcinoma. The consensus on the nomenclature and pathologic characteristics of both entities were recently established by an international consensus group ...
The outcome of patients with cirrhosis and chronic kidney disease treated with combined liver-kidney transplantation (CLKT) is not well known because most series of patients treated with CLKT include not only patients with cirrhosis but also patients with inherited diseases without cirrhosis. To evaluate to what extent the combined kidney transplantation impairs posttransplantation outcome comp...
Cryptogenic cirrhosis (CC) is defined as cirrhosis occurring in an individual without an identifiable cause of liver disease, such as excessive alcohol consumption, viral hepatitis infection, hemochromatosis, autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, chronic intake of medications that could induce cirrhosis, alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, Wilson's disease...
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Genome-wide association studies have revealed an association between the risk of developing liver fibrosis or cirrhosis and the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the PNPLA3, RNF7, MERTK and PCSK7 genes. We aimed to validate these results in an Eastern European population. METHODS We evaluated the associations between the PNPLA3 (rs738409), RNF7 (rs16851720), MERTK ...
In a series of 218 patients diagnosed as having primary biliary cirrhosis only nine exhibited a negative serum mitochondrial antibody. On examining additional specimens from these patients, seven were found to be positive, giving a final incidence of greater than 99%. The two patients whose sera remained negative for the mitochondrial antibody had liver histology compatible with the diagnosis o...
AIM To determine whether hospital characteristics predict cirrhosis mortality and how much variation in mortality is attributable to hospital differences. METHODS We used data from the 2005-2011 Nationwide Inpatient Sample and the American Hospital Association Annual survey to identify hospitalizations for decompensated cirrhosis and corresponding facility characteristics. We created hospital...
A case is described of primary biliary cirrhosis in a 59 year old woman who initially presented with a rash over her lower legs 18 months before diagnosis. Skin biopsy examination showed non-caseating granulomas of the sarcoid type. It is believed that this is the first reported case of primary biliary cirrhosis presenting with a granulomatous rash.
Primary Biliary Cirrhosis and Myasthenia Gravis are both autoimmune conditions, however, there are only rare case reports of their association. This is a case report of acetylcholine receptor antibody positive generalized myasthenia gravis in a female patient with antimitochondrial antibody positive, liver biopsy-confirmed primary biliary cirrhosis.
