BACKGROUND Infected central venous catheters cause morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVE To compare the risk for colonization of central venous catheters used for total parenteral nutrition with that of catheters used for other purposes. METHODS Retrospective review of prospectively acquired data on 260 patients with a stay in a surgical intensive care unit longer than 3 days. Single-lumen cat...
We describe the identification of a rare, left-sided, partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection during routine central venous catheterization. To our knowledge, this is the first report in the literature to describe this anomaly in a hemodialysis patient. A young man had anomalous connection of the veins draining the upper lobe of the left lung and left innominate vein. Our case demonstrate...
INTRODUCTION Ultrasound guidance has emerged as an adjunct for central vein catheterization in both adults and children. However, the use of ultrasound guidance for radial arterial catheterization has not been well established. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound guidance for radial artery catheterization. METHODS PubMed, Embase, and the C...
Editor’s key points † It is recommended that ultrasound (US) is used to facilitate cannulation of the internal jugular vein (IJV). † This observational cohort study compared pre-procedural US with landmark techniques for IJV cannulation under general anaesthesia. † Pre-procedural US was associated with higher success rates, shorter cannulation times, and fewer complications. † These differences...
Thrombosis is an important complication of central venous catheterization. Among the many intrinsic and extrinsic factors, the patient's medical disease can play a role in thrombogenesis. Behcet's disease (BD), classified as a vasculitis, is a multisystem disease involving the small blood vessels. It is often difficult to recognize and diagnose the disease. A 24-yr-old female patient showed mas...
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in children is usually associated with inherited or acquired hypercoagulable state, mechanical obstruction, fractures of long bones, central venous catheterization and prolonged immobility. We report DVT in 4 children with culture proven staphylococcal septicemia. One child died, while other three survived with appropriate antibiotics and anticoagulation therapy.
Deep vein thrombosis is a common disease among Caucasians but is rare in Asia. Venous thrombosis may be fatal, for example by a pulmonary embolism and right or left atrial thrombosis. Alternatively, deep vein thrombosis may follow a benign pattern such as femoral and popliteal vein thrombosis. Theories abound regarding the causes of deep vein thrombosis, with the most common theories being long...
cerebral venous thrombosis, including thrombosis of cerebral veins and major dural sinuses, is an uncommon disorder in the general population. however, it has a higher frequency among patients younger than 40 years of age, patients with thrombophilia, pregnant patients or those receiving hormonal contraceptive therapy or has foreign body such as catheter in their veins or arterial system. in th...
purpose: to determine the frequency of risk factors for retinal vein occlusion (rvo) in patients referred to a private clinic in rasht during 1995-2001. methods: this cross-sectional study was conducted on all patients with rvo who were referred to the clinic. sex, age, hypertension (htn), cardiovascular diseases (cvd), diabetes mellitus (dm), hypercoagulable states, glaucoma, smoking, hyperlip...
