The bacteriophage T4 denV gene encodes a well-characterized DNA repair enzyme involved in pyrimidine photodimer excision. We have discovered the first homologs of the denV gene in chlorella viruses, which are common in fresh water. This gene functions in vivo and also when cloned in Escherichia coli. Photodamaged virus DNA can also be photoreactivated by the host chlorella. Since the chlorella ...

Chlorella pyrenoidosa was found to grow rapidly in tap water. Peak growth was reached after 2 to 3 days. Chlorine and bromine, added to such water, were shown to be effective inhibitors of algal growth. Bromine and bromamine were primarily algicidal, whereas chlorine and chloramines were mainly algistatic. It is assumed that the mechanisms of action of these halogens on Chlorella are not the same.

N-Phenylethylamides 1a-1f, were isolated from cultures of three limnic strains GW90a, GW102a and GW73a. Strain GW102a delivered additionally the compound cyclo(isoleucyldehydroalanyl) (2). The structure of these compounds were assigned by a detailed spectral analysis. Due to their potential use as herbicides, various related compounds 1a, 3, 4a and 4b were synthesized. The minimum inhibitory co...

The green alga Chlorella pyrenoidosa was examined for its ability to metabolize 13-hydroperoxylinoleic and 13-hydroperoxylinolenic acids. The study showed that Chlorella extracts possessed hydroperoxide dehydrase and other enzymes of the jasmonic acid pathway. However, under normal laboratory conditions for culture growth, neither jasmonic acid nor metabolites of the jasmonic acid pathway were ...

A partial cDNA clone coding for the haem-binding domain of NADH:nitrate reductase (EC 1.6.6.1) (NR) from the unicellular green alga Chlorella vulgaris has been isolated, sequenced and expressed. A 1.2 kb cDNA (pCVNR1) was isolated from a lambda gt11 expression library produced from polyadenylated RNA extracted from nitrate-grown Chlorella cells. pCVNR1 hybridized to a 3.5 kb mRNA transcript tha...

Most animal-microbe symbiotic interactions must be advantageous to the hostand provide nutritional benefits to the endosymbiont. When the host providesnutrients, it can gain the capacity to control the interaction, promote self-growthand increase its fitness. Chlorella-like green algae engage in symbioticrelationships with certain protozoans, a partnership which significantly im...

Phycoremediation is the process of employing algae for removing excess nutrient load from wastewater and subsequently diminish the pollution load. It is an alternative technology of treating sewage wastewater compare to conventional treatment process in economical and sustainable way. Therefore, in the present investigation we had made an effort to phycoremediate the IARI’s sewage wastewater wi...

The release of municipal wastewater from various sources can cause contamination of water bodies and algal blooms. In this study isolated strain of chlorella vulgaris was used for treatment of municipal wastewater and biodiesel production. Initially Chlorella culture was prepared in artificial media then it was inoculated in transparent and covered, glass ponds containing wastewater to investig...

Viruses MT325 and FR483, members of the family Phycodnaviridae, genus Chlorovirus, infect the fresh water, unicellular, eukaryotic, chlorella-like green alga, Chlorella Pbi. The 314,335-bp genome of MT325 and the 321,240-bp genome of FR483 are the fi rst viruses that infect Chlorella Pbi to have their genomes sequenced and annotated. Furthermore, these genomes are the two smallest chlorella vir...

BACKGROUND Oxidative stress is involved in age-related muscle atrophy, such as sarcopenia. Since Chlorella, a unicellular green alga, contains various antioxidant substances, we used a mouse model of enhanced oxidative stress to investigate whether Chlorella could prevent muscle atrophy. METHODS Aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) is an anti-oxidative enzyme that detoxifies reactive aldehydes de...
