Background and Aims: The indiscriminate use of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance in the treatment of infections caused by bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The presence of integrons in Pseudomonas is clearly associated with multidrug resistances. Therefore, this study aimed at tracking class I, II and III integrons of antibiotic-resistant isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa th...

BACKGROUND Extended spectrum beta lactamases (ESBLs) are an important cause of transferable multidrug resistance (MDR) in gram-negative bacteria. The most described ESBL genes are generally found within integron-like structures as mobile genetic elements. The aim of this study was to identify the accompanying of class 1 integrons and ESBLs in the MDR E. coli isolates. METHODS Susceptibility t...

OBJECTIVES The contribution of integrons and efflux pumps to multidrug resistance in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia was evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ninety-three S. maltophilia clinical isolates were studied. PCR and direct sequencing were used to detect the presence of integrons. Real-time PCR was performed to assess and quantify the expression of the Sme efflux pumps of S. maltophilia. ...

Class 2 integrons (Tn7) were found in all randomly selected epidemic (n = 27) and preepidemic (n = 13) strains of multiresistant Shigella sonnei biotype g. A class 1 integron was also found in two epidemic strains. Gene cassettes within these integrons account for resistance to commonly used therapeutic agents.

INTRODUCTION The indiscriminate use of antimicrobials has selected for the emergence of resistant strains. Many mechanisms contribute to the spread of antimicrobial-resistant genes, and integrons play a key role in this process. The aim of this study was to describe the serotypes and resistance profiles, and to characterize the presence of integrons in Salmonella strains isolated from Dourados,...

Background: Salmonella spp. are major causes of food-borne disease and have been identified among many diarrheal outbreaks. The major aim of the current investigation was to evaluate the class 1 and 2 integrons and antibiotic resistance pattern in Salmonella enterica isolated from diarrheal food-borne outbreaks in Iran.  Methods: This study was carried out on 115 diarrheal feces samples obtain...

Seventy-two isolates representing 18 serotypes recovered from various food samples collected in Colombia were tested for antimicrobial susceptibilities. The collection was further characterized for extended-spectrum cephalosporin, aminoglycoside, and tetracycline resistance markers. Multidrug resistant (MDR) isolates were further investigated for class 1 integrons and were evaluated for the pre...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The therapeutic options for diseases caused by Escherichia coli are limited. In this study we investigated the presence of virulence factors among Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strains and their antibiotic resistance patterns. The isolates were also checked for the presence of class1 integrons and gene cassettes. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study included 7...

OBJECTIVES To study the evolution between 1999 and 2002 and mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in a multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii clone predominant in isolates from elderly patients with respiratory tract infections. METHODS Susceptibility to antimicrobials was determined using an agar dilution method. Bacterial clones were identified by PCR-fingerprinting and PFGE with ApaI. C...
