Five adults with acute extraocular muscle palsies followed by limited recovery of muscle function were treated with injections of botulinum toxin A to the ipsilateral antagonist of the affected muscle. Three were cases of unilateral sixth nerve palsy, one of bilateral sixth nerve palsy, and one of third nerve palsy. After a period of paralysis, during which the strabismus was overcorrected, the...
INTRODUCTION Cranial nerve palsy is a common presentation in the neuro-ophthalmology clinic and investigations are directed towards the cause. Metastatic breast cancer presenting as carcinomatous meningitis leading to sequential fourth, third and sixth nerve palsy is very rare. This is the first case to be reported to the best of our knowledge. CASE PRESENTATION A 66-year-old Caucasian woman ...
Abstract BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE Third nerve palsies in the pediatric population are most commonly caused by trauma, tumors, or vascular abnormalities. Cystic oculomotor neuropathies, however, rare. We report case of a symptomatic cyst along and within nerve, which has not been described previously. CLINICAL PRESENTATION Here, we 3-yr-old girl presenting with progressive painless palsy. A mag...
A wide variety of visual sensory and ocular motor problems may occur as a direct result of enlargement of the third ventricle. Four patients are described with optic nerve dysfunction, partial third nerve palsy, proptosis, and Sylvian aqueduct syndrome all resulting from an enlarged third ventricle. The pathogenetic mechanisms are discussed.
Claude's syndrome caused by dorsal midbrain lesion is characterized by ipsilateral third nerve palsy and contralateral ataxia. To date, reports in the literature concerning Claude's syndrome associated with the midbrain paresis of horizontal gaze are rare. A 62-year-old man suddenly developed left third cranial nerve palsy, right lateral gaze palsy, and right ataxia. Intact Bell's phenomenon an...
UNLABELLED Partial oculosympathetic palsy followed by ischemic manifestations in brain or retina are the main symptoms of extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection. Unusually, cranial nerves may be affected. Isolated oculomotor nerve palsy is found only rarely. CASE We present a 50-year-old nondiabetic man who experienced acute onset of right occipital headache which spread to the...
This paper is limited to the consideration of acquired ocular palsies attributed to involvement of the cranial nerve pathways, i.e. lower motor neurone lesions. It is not concerned with supranuclear problems, retraction syndromes, myasthenia, dysthyroid eye disease, or blow-out fractures. The words palsy, paresis, and paralysis tend to be used interchangeably, but usually paresis means a mild a...
PURPOSE Fractures of the humeral shaft are common and account for 3%-5% of all orthopedic injuries. This study aims to estimate the incidence of radial nerve palsy and its outcome when the anterior approach is employed and to analyze the predictive factors. METHODS The study was performed in the department of orthopaedics unit of a tertiary care trauma referral center. Patients who underwent ...
