Composite materials fabricated using hollow microspheres are called syntactic foams. Particulate filler composites such as syntactic foams, consisting of glass microballoons and epoxy resin, are desirable for applications that require high compressive and impact strengths and low thermal conductivities. However, for heat dissipation applications, filler additions are required to increase the th...

An analytical investigation on the nonlinear response of doubly curved panels constructed from homogeneous face sheets and carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) core subjected to external pressure in thermal environments is presented this paper. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are into layer through uniform or functionally graded distributions. The properties constituents assumed be temperature ...

Inspired by the layered hierarchical nano- and microstructures of natural nacre, flattened double-walled carbon nanotube (FDWCNT) reinforced epoxy composites are fabricated. Impressively, the prepared composites exhibit layered structures analogous to nacre, and the FDWCNT loading can reach 70 wt%, which results in superior mechanical properties that evidently outperform other existing materials.

Carbon nanotubes are being used in place of carbon fibers in making composites due to their high strength, high aspect-ratio and excellent thermal and electrical conductivity. Although carbon nanotubes were discovered more than a decade ago, works on preparation of satisfactory composites reinforced by carbon nanotubes have encountered difficulties. This review will discuss some registered pate...

Covalent attachment of a non-fluorinated polyetherimide onto the surface of carboxylic acid-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) has been achieved via grafting reactions. This confirms for the first time that the grafting reaction occurs at the nanotube surface when the carboxylic acid-functionalized MWNTs react with the polyetherimide with amine-terminated groups, through both a...

We demonstrate a fully tunable diode structure utilizing a fully suspended single-walled carbon nanotube. The diode's turn-on voltage under forward bias can be continuously tuned up to 4.3 V by controlling gate voltages, which is ∼6 times the nanotube band gap energy. Furthermore, the same device design can be configured into a backward diode by tuning the band-to-band tunneling current with ga...

The remarkable mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes, such as high elastic modulus and tensile strength, make them the most ideal and promising reinforcements in substantially enhancing the mechanical properties of resulting polymer/carbon nanotube composites. It is acknowledged that the mechanical properties of the composites are significantly influenced by interfacial interactions between...
