We demonstrate a mid-infrared Raman-soliton continuum extending from 1.9 to 3 µm in a highly germanium-doped silica-clad fiber, pumped by a nanotube mode-locked thulium-doped fiber system, delivering 12 kW sub-picosecond pulses at 1.95 µm. This simple and robust source of light covers a portion of the atmospheric transmission window.

We consider the Newton’s force law for brane world consisting of periodic configuration of branes. We show that it supports a massless graviton. Furthermore, this massless mode is well separated from the Kaluza-Klein spectrum by a mass gap. Thus most of the problems in phenomenology coming from continuum of Kaluza-Klein modes without mass gap are potentially cured in such a model.

An ultra-broadband distributed-feedback quantum cascade laser array was fabricated, using a heterogeneous cascade based on two bound-to-continuum designs centered at 8.4 and 9.6 m. This array emitted in a range over 220 cm near a 9m wavelength, operated in pulsed mode at room temperature. The output power of the array varied between 100and 1100-mW peak intensity.

We critically analyze the introduction of an independent zero momentum mode field renormalization for φ. It leads to an infrared divergent effective action. It does not achieve its purpose: triviality still gives massless particles in the broken phase in the continuum limit.
