The study presented here outlines a procedure for measuring and quantitatively representing the perceptual tempo of a musical excerpt. We also present a method for applying such measures of perceptual tempo to the design of automatic tempo-trackers in order to more accurately represent the perceived beat in music.

The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of tempo manipulations in radio commercials, on listeners’ evaluation, cognition and persuasion. Questionnaire scores from 131 young and 130 elderly listeners show effects of tempo manipulation on listeners’ subjective evaluation, but not on their cognitive scores. Tempo effects on persuasion scores are modulated by the listeners’ gener...

Tempo is a logic programming language that has recently been designed with the aim of allowing concurrent programs to be written in a more declarative manner than existing languages. One of the benefits of declarative programming is the potential for systematic derivation of programs — the subject of this paper. Here we present a few transformation rules that can be applied to Tempo programs, a...

In musical performances with expressive tempo modulation, the tempo variation can be modelled as a sequence of tempo arcs. Previous authors have used this idea to estimate series of piecewise arc segments from data. In this paper we describe a probabilistic model for a time-series process of this nature, and use this to perform inference of singleand multi-level arc processes from data. We desc...

This paper presents a tempo extraction algorithm for raw, polyphonic audio recordings, assuming that music meter and tempo remain constant throughout the recording. The method was submitted at MIREX 2006, in the context of the Audio Tempo Extraction evaluation task. Our approach is based on the self-similarity analysis of the audio recording and does not assume the presence of percussive instru...

We report the synthesis and characterisation of the nitroxide spin-labelled photoactivatable Pt(iv) prodrug trans,trans,trans-[Pt(N3)2(OH)(OCOCH2CH2CONH-TEMPO)(Py)2] (Pt-TEMPO, where TEMPO = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl). Irradiation with blue visible light gave rise to Pt(ii) and azidyl as well as nitroxyl radicals. Pt-TEMPO exhibited low toxicity in the dark, but on photoactivation wa...

For the description of rhythmic content of music signals usually features are preferred that are invariant in presence of tempo changes. In this paper it is shown that the importance of tempo depends on the musical context. For popular music, a tempo-sensitive feature is improved on multiple datasets using analysis of variance, and it is shown that also a tempo-robust description profits from t...

The mechanistic pathway of TEMPO/I₂-mediated oxidative cyclization of N,N-diaryl amino alcohols 1 was investigated. Based on direct empirical experiments, three key intermediates (aminium radical cation 3, α-aminoalkyl radical 4, and iminium 5), four types of reactive species (radical TEMPO, cationic TEMPO, TEMPO-I, and iodo radical), and three types of pathways ((1) SET/PCET mechanism; (2) HAT...

PS-TEMPO, a polymer-supported 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) was successfully applied as a recyclable, active and selective catalyst for the oxidation of alcohols. Bleach, molecular oxygen and air were successfully used as terminal oxidant under conditions suitable for industrial applications. The intrinsic activity and selectivity of TEMPO for primary alcohols to aldehydes were r...

We provide an overview of two algorithms submitted for the Audio Tempo Extraction contest within MIREX 2005: A non-causal Matlab implementation (Davies submission) [4] and a real-time C implementation (Brossier submission) [3]. Both algorithms extract a primary and secondary tempo, associated phase values for each tempo and the relative salience of the slowest tempo. Results indicate that in co...
