The formation of intramolecular triplex DNA can be regulated by Ag(+) and Cys (cysteine), which switch off/on the fluorescence of the oligonucleotides, 5'-TAMRA-TTC TCT TCC TCT TCC TTC TGA CGA CAG TTG ACT CTT CCT TCT CCT TCT CTT-BHQ-2-3' (Oligo 1) and 3'-GAA GGA AGA GGA AGA GAA-5' (Oligo 2). Based on this principle, sensors for Ag(+) and Cys are developed. The sensor for Ag(+) has a linear rang...

Pooling biospecimens is a well accepted sampling strategy in biomedical research to reduce study cost of measuring biomarkers, and has been shown in the case of normally distributed data to yield more efficient estimation. In this paper we examine the efficiency of pooling, in the context of information matrix related to estimators of unknown parameters, when the biospecimens being pooled yield...

The inclusivity, exclusivity, and detection limit of six 16S rRNA gene-based Helicobacter genus-specific PCR assays were examined. Five out of six assays were 100% inclusive, but the tests varied considerably in their exclusivity (9.1 to 95.5%). The clinical detection limit varied between 10(3) and 1 viable bacterial cell per reaction mixture.

A photoacoustic module (PAM) for methane detection was developed by combining a novel 3.2 μm interband cascade light emitting device (ICLED) with a compact differential photoacoustic cell. The ICLED with a 22-stage interband cascade active core emitted a collimated power of ~700 μW. A concave Al-coat reflector was positioned adjacent to the photoacoustic cell to enhance the gas absorption lengt...

Optimizing the acquisition parameters for EELS recording has to be accomplished simultaneously from the physical and the statistical points of view; the statistical aspect of the question is covered here. Approximate probability density functions of the variables of interest are derived, which provide a global measure of signal-to-noise ratio taking into account every step of the EELS edge area...

Epidemiological investigations of health effects related to chronic low-level exposures or other circumstances often face the difficult task of dealing with levels of biomarkers that are hard to detect and/or quantify. In these cases instrumentation may not adequately measure biomarker levels. Reasons include a failure of instruments to detect levels below a certain value or, alternatively, int...

The analysis of lead(II) by continuous flow square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) at a gold electrode flow cell is described. Various experimental variables have been optimized to yield low detection limit and good precision. The detection limits for a 30 s and 600 s electrodeposition were 3.5 and 0.38 μg L-1, respectively. The recoveries were found to be 113 1.8 % and 108 2.3 % (n=5...

A novel parylene-embedded carbon nanotube nanoelectrode array is presented for use as an electrochemical detector working electrode material. The fabrication process is compatible with standard microfluidic and other MEMS processing without requiring chemical mechanical polishing. Electrochemical studies of the nanoelectrodes showed that they perform comparably to platinum. Electrochemical pret...

We report the implementation of a micro-patterned, glass-based photonic sensing element that is capable of label-free biosensing. The diffractive optical analyzer is based on the differential response of diffracted orders to bulk as well as surface refractive index changes. The differential read-out suppresses signal drifts and enables time-resolved determination of refractive index changes in ...

This paper reports the first application of surface enhanced Raman chemical imaging on pharmaceutical tablets containing the active ingredient (API) in very low concentrations. Taking advantage of the extremely intensive Raman signals in the presence of silver colloids, image aquisition time was radically decreased. Moreover, the investigation of drug distribution below the detection limit of r...
