Fig. 2. The difference (I) between tidal volume measured by pneumotachograph (VT,) and tidal volume estimated by probe device (VT,) against the average (I) of these two values. A horizontal line is drawn at zero difference for reference. Lines for the mean and 2SD range (95%) of the difference are shown. The trend of points is down to the right, except for the outlier, indicating that bias may ...
The sniffing position (SP) has traditionally been considered the optimal head position for direct laryngoscopy (DL). Its superiority over other head positions, however, has been questioned during the last decade. We reviewed the scarce literature on the subject to examine the evidence either in favor or against the routine use of the SP. A standard definition for the position should be used (e....
We report a case of acute upper airway obstruction caused by a rapidly expanding blood-filled bulla in the oropharynx (angina bullosa haemorrhagica), requiring tracheal intubation. The larynx could not be visualized by either awake fibreoptic laryngoscopy or direct laryngoscopy under anaesthesia. Surgical tracheostomy was therefore performed under general anaesthesia.
INTRODUCTION Sufficient ventilation and oxygenation through proper airway management is essential in patients undergoing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Although widely discussed, securing the airway using an endotracheal tube is considered the standard of care. Endotracheal intubation may be challenging and causes prolonged interruption of chest compressions. Videolaryngoscopes have been...
BACKGROUND Nasotracheal intubation typically comprises three distinct stages: (i) nasopharyngeal intubation; (ii) direct laryngoscopy to identify the vocal cords; and (iii) the passage of the tracheal tube into the trachea. The aim of this study was to identify and compare the cardiovascular responses associated with each of these stages. METHODS Seventy-five ASA I or II patients, aged 16-65 ...
The C-MAC videolaryngoscope is the first Macintosh-typed videolaryngoscope. Since the advent of its original version video Macintosh system in 1999, this device has been modified several times. A unique feature of C-MAC device is its ability to provide the 2 options of direct and video laryngoscopy with the same device. The available evidence shows that in patients with normal airways, C-MAC vi...
