The CLSI Antifungal Subcommittee followed the M23-A2 "blueprint" to develop interpretive MIC breakpoints for anidulafungin, caspofungin, and micafungin against Candida species. MICs of < or = 2 microg/ml for all three echinocandins encompass 98.8 to 100% of all clinical isolates of Candida spp. without bisecting any species group and represent a concentration that is easily maintained throughou...

Echinocandin antifungal agents are not routinely recommended for the treatment of candiduria due to low urine concentrations and a paucity of clinical data supporting this indication. This report presents five cases describing the use of micafungin for the treatment of candiduria. Each patient received parenteral micafungin for a minimum of 6 days and had resolution of baseline fungal within 30...

The therapeutic effectiveness of water-soluble echinocandin compounds obtained from Coleophoma empetri F-11899, which has a strong inhibitory effect on the growth of fungi, was examined in nude mice with experimental Pneumocystis pneumonia. The studies demonstrated the potential usefulness of the compounds.

With molecular sequencing as a gold standard, the Vitek MS, Bruker Biotyper MS, and Vitek-2 Compact systems correctly identified 92.7%, 97.0%, and 15.2% of 164 Candida guillermondii isolates, respectively, and none of 8 C. fermentati isolates. All of the isolates showed high susceptibility to echinocandins, but some C. guilliermondii isolates showed low azole susceptibility.

The concentration-dependent effects of echinocandins on the metabolic activity of Aspergillus spp. were comparatively studied by using nongerminated and germinated conidia. The susceptibilities of 11 Aspergillus fumigatus, 8 A. terreus and 8 A. flavus isolates to caspofungin, micafungin, and anidulafungin were studied by a CLSI (formerly NCCLS) M38-A broth microdilution-based method. After 48 h...
