This paper describes the methods we have employed to solve the author profiling task at PAN-2013. Our goal was to use simple features to identify the age group and the gender of the author of a given text. We introduce the features, detail how the classifiers were trained, and how the experiments were run.

detecting faces in cluttered backgrounds and real world has remained as an unsolved problem yet. in this paper, by using composition of some kind of independent features and one of the most common appearance based approaches, and multilayered perceptron (mlp) neural networks, not only some questions have been answered, but also the designed system achieved better performance rather than the pre...

A security feature is a customer-valued capability of software for mitigating a set of security threats. Incremental development of security features, using the Scrum method, often leads to developing ineffective features in addressing the threats they target due to factors such as incomplete security tests. This paper proposes the use of security assurance cases to maintain a global view of th...

relies critically on the ability to find effective image features to represent the database images. The shape of an object is a fundamental image feature and belongs to one of the most important image features used in CBIR. In this article we propose a robust and effective shape feature known as the compound image descriptor (CID), which combines the Fourier transform (FT) magnitude and phase c...

This article provides an overview of the literature on best practices for designing retirement savings plans and providing financial education in the workplace. These two elements are critically important considerations for plan providers. Both must be carefully constructed to maximize the effectiveness of an employersponsored retirement savings program in helping participants build adequate fu...

In the past decades, many different techniques have been used to improve face recognition performance. The most common and well-studied ways are to use the whole face image to build a subspace based on the reduction of dimensionality. Differing from methods above, we consider face recognition as an image classification problem. The face images of the same person are considered to fall into the ...

We explore the use of restricted dialogue contexts in reinforcement learning (RL) of effective dialogue strategies for information seeking spoken dialogue systems (e.g. COMMUNICATOR (Walker et al., 2001)). The contexts we use are richer than previous research in this area, e.g. (Levin and Pieraccini, 1997; Scheffler and Young, 2001; Singh et al., 2002; Pietquin, 2004), which use only slot-based...

We are concerned with the extraction of effective color features for a content-based image retrieval (CBIR) application in dermatology. Effectiveness is measured by he rate of correct retrieval of images from four color classes of skin lesions. We employ and compare two different methods: Limited Rank Matrix Learning Vector Quantization (LiRaM LVQ) and a Large Margin Nearest Neighbor (LMNN) app...

Human communication involves a number of verbal, vocal, and non-verbal cues that facilitate face-to-face communication. Building a computational understanding of how these cues facilitate social and cognitive processes enables new research directions in social and cognitive sciences and the design of socially interactive systems such as agents and robots. In this paper, we present preliminary w...
