Historians and biographers have studied Paul Ehrlich as a biochemist, a medical messiah, and an eccentric. 1 The links with industry of this Nobel Prize-winning pioneer of experimental therapeutics and immunology have, however, been largely neglected. Perhaps this was because commercial involvement was regarded as unseemly by historians, or because those ties were thought to be insignificant in...

The phenomenon of accelerated metastatic tumor growth following the removal of the primary tumor is a major reason for cancer relapse, caused by underlying mechanisms that are not as yet understood. We hypothesized that a growth-stimulating factor is produced by the tumor-bearing host. This assumption was confirmed by an experiment involving the removal of a primary tumor (ascitic and solid Ehr...

A number of novel 3-bromo-4-methyl-7-methoxy-8-amino substituted coumarins and 2-substituted 7-bromo-6-methyl-8H-pyrano-benzimidazoles, benzoxazoles and/or benzoxazine-8-ones were synthesized for the purpose of pharmacological evaluation. Some representative compounds showed antitumor activity in vitro on Ehrlich ascites carcinoma in the preliminary testing.

A new antibiotic, victomycin, is active against a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and also has in vivo activity against solid Sarcoma 180 and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma. It belongs to the phleomycin-bleomycin group of antibiotics and has been differentiated from all known phleomycins and bleomycins by its physicochemical properties and thin-layer chromatograms.

A new diterpene antitumor antibiotic, myrocin C, has been isolated from the culture filtrate of a soil fungus, Myrothecium verrucaria strain No. 55. The antibiotic was effective against Gram-positive bacteria, fungi and yeasts, and prolonged the life span of mice bearing Ehrlich ascites carcinoma.

Antitumor activity of the adduct between Carboplatin and alpha-cyclodextrin has been tested against Sarcoma 180 (S(180)) and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) murine tumors. The preliminary toxicity has also been evaluated by histological examinations of the treated animals. The results show the adduct has less antitumor efficacy than and similar toxicity to Carboplatin.

We have recently examined the oncolytic effect of arabinoxylan rice bran, MGN-3/biobran, against solid Ehrlich carcinoma (SEC)-bearing mice via immune-modulation and apoptosis [N.K. Badr El-din, E. Noaman, M. Ghoneum, In vivo tumor inhibitory effects of nutritional rice bran supplement MGN-3/biobran on Ehrlich carcinoma-bearing mice, Nutr. Cancer 60 (2) (2008) 235-244]. In the present study, we...

Ehrlich was the first to demonstrate, by his famous “zig-zag― (i.e., mouse to rat to mouse, etc.) experiment, that the Ehrlich mouse sarcoma can grow in rats (4). Russell showed that a mouse tumor designated as “@7― multiplied and survived in rats 9 days before regressing (1@). Murphy demonstrated that mammalian tumors may be grown in the developing chick embryo (7). Mur phy and Rous re...

The present study was concerned with the pharmacological potency of zizyphus leaves extract towards antitumor in the form of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) model in female albino mice. Ascites tumor was introduced into mice by inoculation of 2 x 10 viable tumor cells/mouse. After 10 days of transplantation, the extraction of zizyphus leaves was given daily for 21 days via intraperitoneal route...

The Ehrlich ascites tumor, which has been subjected to prolonged selection for growth in allogeneic hosts, possesses powerful mechanisms for the suppression of antigens normally found on the cell surface. It has previously been shown (1, 2) that when cells in which surface antigens are fully expressed are fused with Ehrlich cells, the suppressive mechanisms of the latter continue to operate and...
