The amount of strain in functioning dentures (and the resultant tissue distortion) caused by using various posterior teeth of different occlusal configurations has not been satisfactorily investigated. In an attempt to determine which occlusal form produces the greater overall strain and the greater strain per unit pressure applied, interchangeable posterior teeth (zero degree and anatomic) a w...

Experimental tests in prototype are necessary to understand the dynamic behaviour of the machine during different operating points. Hydraulic phenomena as well as its effect on the structure need to be studied in order to avoid instabilities during operation and to extend the lifetime of the different components. For this purpose, a complete experimental study of a large Francis turbine prototy...

We describe what is to our knowledge the first use of fiber Bragg gratings written into three separate cores of a multicore fiber for two-axis curvature measurement. The gratings act as independent, but isothermal, fiber strain gauges for which local curvature determines the difference in strain between cores, permitting temperature-independent bend measurement.

Based on the bending experiment for two-span continuous post-tension beams with unbounded tendons and externally applied CFRP sheets, the analysis of the stress increment of unbonded tendons is monitored in the loading process. Since self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a suitable innovation,, understanding the implementation of this type of concrete on the ultimate unbonded tendon stress is criti...

PURPOSE The aim of the present study was to evaluate, by means of strain gauge analysis, the effect of different implant angulations on strains around two implants retaining mandibular overdenture with Locator attachments. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four duplicate mandibular acrylic models were constructed. Two implants were inserted in the canine regions using the following degrees of distal incl...

BACKGROUND The treatment of patients with partially atrophic rib and rib defects requires an ideal arc of the rib that has adequate bone length and width. To design and assemble a distraction device with a strain gauge, we need to establish an animal model for testing it during rib distraction osteogenesis. METHODS Osteotomies were performed at the same position in the fifth rib in 8 rabbits....

The use of force plates to measure whole-body locomotor mechanics is a well-established technique. However, commercially available force plates are not sensitive enough for use on small-bodied vertebrates or invertebrates. The standard design for singleand multiple-axis, high-sensitivity force plates built by individual research groups uses semiconductor foil strain gauges to measure deflection...

Determining the deformation response of geosynthetics under load is important in developing an in-depth understanding of the engineering behavior of these materials. Current strain determination methods employed as part of tensile tests mostly assume that the strain is uniform throughout the specimen and, hence, are incapable of determining local strains. Geosynthetics have occasionally been in...

Two designs incorporating embedded fiber Fabry-Perot interferometers as strain gauges were used for monitoring gas pressure in internal combustion engines. Measurements on a Diesel engine, a gasoline-fueled engine, and a natural-gas engine are reported.

Many complications in craniofacial surgery can be attributed to a lack of characterization of facial skeletal strain patterns. This study aimed to delineate human midfacial strain patterns under uniform muscle loading. The left sides of 5 fresh-frozen human cadaveric heads were dissected of all soft tissues except the temporalis and masseter muscles. Tensile forces were applied to the free mand...
